
The Meath players who won the All-Ireland senior football title 50 years ago in 1967 will be honoured at a celebration dinner in the Knightsbrook Hotel on Friday, September 15, it was announced at the County Committee meeting at Dunganny on Monday night.
The team coached by Peter McDermott conquered Cork in the final played on September 24 with Terry Kearns fisting in the decisive goal in the second half.
After losing out to the Galway three-in-a-row champions in 1966, the team captained by Peter Darby defeated Louth, Westmeath and Kildare in Leinster before outscoring Mayo by 3-14 to 1-14 in the penultimate round clash.
Remarkably the15 players in the final (no subs were brought on) were from 15 different clubs.
The final team was: Sean McCormack; Mick White, Jack Quinn, Peter Darby (capt); Pat Collier, Bertie Cunningham, Pat Reynolds; Peter Moore, Terry Kearns; Tony Brennan, Mattie Kerrigan, Mick Mellett; Paddy Mulvaney, Noel Curran, Ollie Shanley. Subs were: Paddy Cromwell, Ollie Geraghty, Martin Quinn, Peter Black, Mick O'Brien, Austin Lyons, David Carty, Jimmy Walsh, Pat Rooney, Pat Bruton, Murty O'Sullivan, Gerry Quinn.
Sadly four of the panel, Peter Moore, Noel Curran, Paddy Cromwell and Peter Black, have passed away.
A limited amount of tickets, 35 euro each, will be available for the dinner.
