GERALDINES 1-11

A late goal from Alan McKenna helped St Josephs book their place in the semi-final of the Senior Championship at the expense of neighbours Geraldines at The Grove on Saturday evening.

The Cluskey Park side had the edge for much of this quarter final replay but the Gers got right back into contention entering the final six minutes when a Josh Arrowsmith goal left just a point between the teams.

However, the Joes were not in the mood to let the opportunity slip from their grasp and McKenna's goal along with points from Alan Quigley and Conal O'Hanlon saw them safely over the line.

The reigning Intermediate champions began the game in blistering fashion as Derek Mulligan found the net for the first score of the game inside two minutes, only for three points from Jim McEneaney to cancel out that effort by the tenth minute.

Quigley pointed to restore the Joes lead but with Dara Hamill and Glen Trainor responding at the other end, the Gers were in a good position with a 0-7 to 1-1 lead after 22 minutes.

It wasn't looking good for the Joes at that stage but they managed to get back on level terms before turning the game in their favour when Adam O'Connor added a second goal to help his side lead by 2-4 to 0-7 at the break.

A Matt Corcoran point helped the Gers cut the gap back to two points at 2-6 to 0-10 but crucially the Joes kept their noses in front and extended the gap with points from David Mernagh and Quigley.

When Arrowsmith got in for a goal the gap was down to 2-8 to 1-10 and it looked as if a dramatic finale was in store. However, the Joes quickly reasserted their authortity when McKenna hit the net and they pressed home their advantage when Quigley and O'Hanlon pointed either side of a McEneaney score to seal the victory.
