NEWTOWN BLUES 4-11 KILKERLEY EMMETS 3-10

Newtown Blues carried their recent good form into the Senior Championship as they defeated Kilkerley Emmets in the opening game of Group 2 at The Grove on Saturday evening.

The Drogheda men were in fine form in the first half as they struck four goals to take a ten point lead into the break.

However, Kilkerley staged a second half comeback but in the end just fell short as the Blues did enough to hold out for victory.

The Drogheda men were already two points up when Paul Moore grabbed the first goal on seven minutes and soon after Ross Nally added a second from the penalty spot.

The Emmets got off the mark through Tadgh McEneaney before Shane Lennon found the net to bring the gap back to 2-3 to 1-1.

However, the next two scores were goals for the Blues from Robert Carr and Ciaran Downey to put their side firmly in command. Kilkerley gave themselves renewed hope when Lennon scored from a penalty to cut the gap to 4-6 to 2-2 at half time.

The North Louth side came out strongly in the second half and scored five of the first seven points to retain hope but the Blues always looked to be in control.

The goal Kilkerley desperately needed came from James Fegan in 29th minute but unfortunately for his side it was too late to make any real impact and the Blues held out for a deserved win.
