SFC: Byrne stars as Mochtas progress

St. Pats Eoin O'Connor is put under pressure by St. Mochtas Gerry Garland during the Louth SFC quarter final at Darver

ST MOCHTAS 1-15

ST PATRICKS 1-11

Declan Byrne turned in an inspirational display as St Mochtas overcame St Patricks at Darver on Sunday evening to claim their place in the last four of the Senior Championship.

The Louth star landed a total of nine points as the Louth Village men held of a determined St Pats side who played the second half with just 14 men following the dismissal of Eoin O’Connor on a second yellow.

Despite that handicap, the Lordship men were in the game right until the final minute when the Mochtas sealed the win with a goal from substitute Cormac Smyth.

It was Byrne who had the first score of the game but the Pats came storming back with points from Cathal Grogan, Aidan McCann, Leonard Grey and Jack Murphy to lead by three.

Three in a row from Byrne had the teams level before brother Ciaran had the Mochtas back in front. However, the Pats struck the first goal of the game through Martin Breen just before the break to send the teams in level at 1-6 to 0-9 but they did suffer a setback when O’Connor was given his marching orders.

Jack Murphy put the Pats ahead early in the second half but there remained little between the teams as they continued to trade scores. Declan Byrne pointed on 55 minutes to put the Mochtas one up and this time the Pats were unable to respond as Smyth’s late goal sent his team through.
