Does GAA get fair coverage compared to soccer and rugby

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

janesboro you have hit on the crux of the matter - it is the GAA themselves -their Croke Park media/pr teams and all the county pro's -who need to he pro-active to generate 'news' worth covering. However as you state this would necessarily involve managers, players etc. making themselves available and as anyone on this website knows with training and more importantly work and family commitments that is not a practical option for most of them. Sticking up statistics of coverage is a futile exercise unless the GAA themselves are going to address it. Or maybe people just need to accept it as a natural consequence of being an amateur sport and competitors having full lives away from the pitch.

And surely if the GAA themselves perceived that they were receiving unfair treatment wouldn't they be doing something about it? And if not they should be asked why?

So now in order to get coverage The GAA need to generate news worthy events despite the fact that the National Football Leagues in both mens and ladies football are up and running jimski !!!!! All 32 counties bar Kilkenny are involved . There is interest the length and breadth of the country in these competitions. RTE Radio provides good coverage of these competitions. RTE Television lag badly behind. Their coverage of Garlic Games as Mediaman has consistently highlighted is stilted towards rugby at the expense not just of Gaelic Games but all other sports. Look at the deplorable coverage afforded to ladies soccer in comparison to ladies rugby.

Rightly or wrongly that's the way media and pr work. You have to fight for space and make coverage (video etc.) available. Go back and read janesboro's suggestions on the previous page. It's not a case of 'if you build it they will come'.

I've just read janesboro's post jimski and there is a lot in it . There are certainly good ideas in relation to self promotion. It shouldn't be beyond The GAA at national level to employ some young newly qualified journalists who come from within it's own ranks to work with and use all branches of the media ie. print, radio, TV, social and internet to produce GAA material. Mediaman should also forward his research to GAA headquarters. It would be very interesting to see what they would do with it. I think the ideas in relation to clubs is probably already being utilised at local level but articles of interest in relation to specific clubs would have a place in GAA programmes. I wonder could this then further develop in to a GAA TV channel broadcast over the Internet and possibly Sky. The point about The GAA using it's resources and muscle to combate RTE TV's indifference to all bar championship Gaelic Games is well made by both you and Janesboro. I stand converted.

Will Ireland captain, Rory Best sing Amnran Na Fhiann before tomorrow's 6 nations game? I think the captain should be proud to sing the anthem of his country before an international rugby game.

And here I was thinking that Neil Delamere had the Offaly Standup Comedy market covered ?

Another 10,000 plus crowd in Castlebar tonight. Intense stuff. Well done to both Dublin and Mayo. I notice today's attendance in Paris was nearly 15,000 down on those team's last meeting in Paris two years ago. Is that due to a World Cup hangover or security fears?

why does it matter if he does or doesn't sing a song before the game?

There are more handball clubs in Ireland than rugby clubs.

Odd that the All-Ireland Junior and Intermediate Football Final results were given on last nights 6.01 News and Sport but not today's equivalent hurling results. Pat Spillane's Templenoe won the Junior Football yesterday?

Well seeing as he's an elite athlete and not a cabaret act, I'd have to ask who cares what he does or doesn't sing? Can Bruce Springsteen score from a sideline cut?

The semi-finals of the country's biggest club competition in any sport, the All-Ireland Club Senior Football Championship, are being played tomorrow. RTE 6.01 News and Sport made no reference whatsoever to either game on tonight's programme. No surprise there.

If even the GAA dont gove a toss about clubs games, why would RTE?

Good to see 40 seconds of this afternoon's thriller on the RTE 6.01 News and Sport. Less good to see that Ballyboden's 'Darragh' O'Mahoney was sent off. Whoever he might be? Professional TV at its best.

For the first time ever the Ladies Football League has featured on each of the last 3 Sunday evening RTE 6.01 News and Sport programmes. Admittedly the total time for all 3 involved was only 20 seconds but it's a start. No doubt Jerome Quinn rather than RTE was responsible for the match coverage involved. So why is RTE suddenly taking an interest in the Ladies Football League something it never did before? I'm sure it has nothing to do with the fact that the new Ladies Football sponsor Lidl is spending serious amounts of money on television advertising ???

Maybe because with England and France taking the rugby seriously the IRFU hype train is derailing. Was rediculous that a game played by only 4000 women was given national coverage over a game played by 20000 girls and women. Long may this continue.

Being completely honest, I think the GAA gets an awful lot of coverage, as much as the rugby. English soccer coverage is disproportionate but it is what people want.
The sport that really gets screwed by RTE is boxing.

The 6 Nations has always been taken seriously by England/France. When has it not?
