setanta ireland in fairness although not on saorview is far easier accessible then sky sports as it comes on the basic packages on digital and although they said analog would be switched off they actually have not done it so if you have a tv thats not saor view ready you can still get setanta just like rte tv3 tg4 and the likes

1558920 Let me explain this. Lots of confusion going on here The setanta package that they run at the moment is up for renewal, setanta and sky have put in offers for THAT package. Nothing more nothing less, its mostly for overseas viewers. Now why aren't we having the same debate about setanta??? . I hope sky get it, as it will make rte think that they could buy theirs , now due to broadcasting act ie law, they must provide all ire finals and semi finals free to air, even if sky bought everything under the sun they still would have to be free to air . That's not going to happen anyway but that is the fact. So please less of the scare mongering and we selling our soul yadeya tripe. Its only a package that is already sold to another company.
Good post, people read a line and then come to a million different conclusions. Don't open Irelands doors to the neo cons . keep the blinds down and they wont know were here ffs . Id say some posters on here wanted the hedge schools to stay.

Ah, ok. To be fair, most people didn't realise it was just those rights, hence the outcry. Just one thing, I though Setanta had stopped broadcasting the games abroad in 2012, do they still have an international package? Any games I watch over here (USA) are delivered by Premier Sports, are they and Setanta one and the same?

Cheers for clearing that up, I didn't realise meself that it's only Setanta's rights they're after, would love to see Sky take the Gaa off them, I think they'd do a better job.

Good grief, that's the worst over-reaction I've seen on this thread so far. Some people would like the games to stay free-to-air on the national broadcaster, hardly outrageous, I don't see anything anachronistic about that. if that's not being threatened, I doubt anyone would care what any other broadcaster does.

Marlon I can't be absolutely sure but I think they are one and they same bit like utv and LTV some different programs but under one umbrella. In fairness hill it will be sky Ireland which would produce it. And say what you like about them they provide jobs in this country including the putting in of customer service here now rather than Scotland. Look its this package, if they offered more money than the other bidder ( that's the rumour) then the gaa have a obligation to sell it to them, once they adhere to the rules likeeeveryone else. Its not the death of the armature status, it won't mean we have Glenn hoddle commentating on matches. As for pundits Graham geraghty, Micky Lyndon , Jason sherlock etc would be excellent choices for it they all wrote or write excellent articles. But that's just my opinion. Way too much hysteria , in the grand scheme of things it will make absolutely no difference to majority of gaa people, it might mean a few more euros been funnelled to Carlow or whoever (not much more) but that's all

Htaem . Yeah that's basically it. Now the fear of some is that if this is a success for sky they will bid in years to come for more, ( unlike setanta they'd have the money to): and they may even secure some championship games. But all any of that is speculation at this stage or at anytime in the near future and it would firstly be for overseas diaspora anyway.

Im not suggesting the GAA should give the rights to games to sky, but RTE has treated the GAA extremely poorly, not bothered to show league games, and a highlights show, that tries to run through games, like they are against the clock. So its understandale that the GAA would shop around to see what is the best deal, they could find.

PK57 agree with you entirely. Should at the least be a comprehensive highlights show on RTE.

Thank God for TG4! at least one portion of my license fee is well spent. If I could only stop paying for RTE now that would be even better. The only way I am going to pay to see a GAA game is going to the match live. IMO - Setanta/Sky are just for armchairs or bar stools and TV3 well there is no yard stick low enough to measure them.

If TG4 would only swallow their pride and broadcast in a language that the vast majority of people on this Island understand (English, they should try English) then I'd be fine with them but continuously broadcasting in Irish is a bit of a hindrance.

yeah but it will stay be adding more cost to most then setanta ireland does as it wont be on sky one it will be sky sports one thing writing in a paper and another being on tv as a lot of them are not comfortable in front of a camera for me the only one who looks comfortable outside of rte guys is senan connell not saying he brilliant analyst but he looks very relaxed and always praises a game as opposed to the others will make a big differance to gaa supporters who have to then buy sky sports packages if they want to watch the national league which in turn would reduce the amount of viewers if your being honest as you would have more watching on setanta then sky sports

maybe you should have listened in scholl and learned your countrys lanaguage or still even better educate yourself now that your an adult and learn you guessed it the irish language whats wrong with a station for the irish language in ireland some people are either too lazy or so anlgicised that they cannot see it plus how hard is it to watch a match listening to tg4? they call the players names the exact same as any other station and when you go and watch meath play do you need a commentator to tell you what you are looking at?

just a little aside to all the naive sky apologists on here. If SKY could grab all the rights and make us pay for it all and drive rte/tv3/tg4 out of business they would. they have no love of ireland or its sports. the murdoch empire is one of the most despicable around. The only reason Sky would want the overseas rights would be to put Setanta/Premier out of business. then they could up their prices to as much as they want as there would be no alternative for those living abroad. At the moment you don't need a sky sports package to have setanta/premier. in fact you don't even need a sky subscription.I am damn sure if Sky take it over you would certainly need both a sky subscription including a sports package.

Haha ok, well maybe you should have listened in SCHOOL aswell and you'd know how to spell it ;-)

Nah, I'd rather educate myself to speak a language that I could use in many other countries like Spanish or French instead of Irish, which I don't consider my first language. I mean at this stage surely English is my first language, we've been speaking it for many years now.
Ps, also I never said there was anything wrong with having a station for the Irish language in Ireland, you have a nasty little habit of making things up hill. You're very welcome to listen to Irish on TG4 if you want to, I have no problem with that at all, I just think that something as important as our national sports should be broadcast in a language which most people understand.......I mean that's a pretty reasonable thing to say surely.

Yeah its most inconsiderate that an Irish language station would broadcast in Irish. I mean the Ukrainians dowmgraded Russian language and it will probably cause WWIII, so be very careful! Irish is still far more preferable on TV than RTEs D4 or worse RTEs "cultured culchie" speak. So turn the TV down and enjoy if it upsets you that much.

Not that upset arock, I'm not going to be tossing and turning any night of the year at the thoughts of TG4 showing Gaa in Irish but from a practical point of view it makes more sense to broadcast in English, that's all, nothing more.
