Replying To Pikeman96:  "@Viking66 - Did you not have a minor team of your own last year? Even as Taghmore Gaels or some other combination?

Am guessing not, if this lad was looking to avail of the "isolated player" rule. But even so, sounds to me like the rule was applied properly in this case. I reckon that to get from Taghmon to Horeswood, you'd be passing through the catchment area of at least two other clubs. Depending on how exactly you travelled, you'd surely hit least two of Clongeen, Adamstown, Gusserane, and Rathgarogue-Cushinstown.

What I don't understand is how it appears the rule wasn't as strictly enforced in the Marshalstown/Oulart case.

Did you have other players of that age last year take up the "isolated player" facility, and if so, what clubs did they join with?"
2 joined Adamstown and 1 joined St Annes. We were in talks to amalgamate with another club but it fell through."
I see. Fact that other players actually joined neighbouring clubs probably didn't help him. Adamstown already had their quota of two, but if St. Anne's were willing to take in one, strong chance they'd have taken another as well, so would be hard to convince the powers-that-be of why he should be allowed go all the way to Horeswood instead.

In the case of Quigley - could be what MyOhMi says above, that actual neighbouring clubs preferred to stick to their own players rather than take in an "outsider". But the wording of the bye-law is a bit vague and ambiguous here (and yes, it's nit-picking time!). "Not being in a position to accommodate" is not the same as "doesn't want to accommodate".

Only way you seriously wouldn't be in a position to accommodate is if you've taken in two isolated players already, like Adamstown had done in that Minor Football case.

But even if you wanted to stick with your own players, then you could still technically "accommodate" him by letting him train with your squad and giving him a sub's jersey when a match came round. You just wouldn't be accommodating him in the way he wanted to be accommodated.

A Player's application must initially be to a neighbouring club. However, in the event of the neighbouring club/clubs not being in a position to accommodate such a request the option shall be open to them for application to another club within the county.

Considering he would have had to cross Monageer-Boolavogue territory to get from Marshalstown to Oulart, and possibly had to cross Rapparees territory too (depending on what road he took), I wonder on what grounds they weren't "in a position to accommodate such a request" ?

Or why he wasn't advised then to apply to some other neighbouring club instead? For example, Marshalstown and Duffry Rovers would be a more "natural" link than Marshalstown and Oulart."
We had a player last year who ended up not playing minor Football at all because of that rule. He was at school in Good Counsel, was previously on the u16 Football Development Squad, and wanted to play for Horeswood as his friends at school were from there, but because they were not a neighbouring club his request was denied."
From what i recall the local clubs that entered U21 teams said they couldn't 'accomodate' him and that is why he went to Oulart. Isolated players long term are of little benefit to a club - they can be a short sighted approach as it inevitably means that some other player within the club will be dropped"]Not too sure an isolated player replacing one of your own really has that much of a negative impact from a developmental perspective

If they're getting dropped because of an isolated player at Minor or U21 level, they're on the fringes of the team and if we're being honest, if you look at the fringe players on any Minor or U21 team, the likelihood is that only a small few will still be playing ten years later (Lost interest, didn't think they were good enough, college, work, family, injuries etc)

He wasnt in secondary school with anyone from the Annes. Or Ballyhogue, Barntown, St Martins, Bannow, Clongeen either. Generally the clubs who go to Counsel arent bordering us anyway except Adamstown, who had already taken 2.
Logistics also. How was he supposed to get from New Ross to Rathangan 2 or 3 times a week? There's not even a bus goes that route. At least if he had of gone to Horeswood he could've got a lift with his friends from school.

The rule needs to be looked at. Its not as if he was glory hunting by going to Horeswood.

@Viking66 - I don't know. Even allowing for how Adamstown couldn't take him if they already had two isolated players, you've named six other clubs where he could have applied, and you haven't mentioned Gusserane. It's not as though he didn't have options.

Would be a tricky one to write a new rule to basically say "an isolated player shall be allowed to choose to play with any club where he has friends, and shouldn't have to apply first to a neighbouring club if he doesn't know anybody there".

Gusserane arent a neighbouring club any more than Horeswood are. We are at the Wexford end of the Ross District, we border as many Wexford District clubs as we do Ross District ones, along with one Enniscorthy District one.
I was just looking at it from a practical point of view for the player. Knowing teammates, and transport logistics for the player and his parents. Generally lads from our parish go to Peters, Good Counsel, Adamstown with a couple at Bridgetown and Wexford CBS. The 2 lads who went to Adamstown went to Adamstown school. The lad who went to the Annes Im not sure.
Up or down it would surely have been better for our club, and the county as a whole bearing in mind he was on Development Squads, had he been able to play minor at all rather than taking an enforced year out at his age.

Issues with the lights in Wexford Park apparently which could mean tomorrows Q/F games get pushed back to earlier times. Had heard the lights failed last weekend and were looked at on Monday - apparently failed again during testing yesterday.

Just heard the go-ahead has been given for tonight's Minor Hurling Premier Final there between Monageer-Boolavogue and Glynn-Barntown.

Am taking it that's a sign they're confident the lights issue has been solved. Also that there'll be no need for change to any other fixture.

Yes everything going ahead as per fixtures so they must be confident - Big night for Monageer. Have they ever played in or won a premier minor hurling title before?

Never played in one. Have won a few Minor titles in lower grades over the years all right, but never been in a top grade final, and for most of the time since Minor went away from just one grade for all, haven't even been in the top grade to begin with.

Big big night coming up!
