Agree 100%. Murphy and Donoghue are good too. Very good podcast.

But that's my arguement. I think the footballers are improving. I don't think they'll win the Tailteann cup this year but they might make the semi final or final. (A day out in Croke park.) They could have made the Semi final/final of Leinster this year and they would definitely be hoping to do so next year - lets be honest outside of Dublin any one of 8 teams could make the Leinster final depending on the Draw. That would be another 2 games in Croker plus the Sam Maguire.. (Which guarantees one game in Croker I think). So if you are looking at the two codes Football is a lot more appealing than it was for the next few years. And when you get that then you will get a few lads that would have opted for hurling sticking with football (the likes of Red Barry in his day). I agree that not every hurler would make the football team. but lets be honest there's about 5 hurlers that would walk onto the football team if the decided to play, Liam Ryan Matt O Hanlon, Chin, Simon Donohoe, Kevin Foley for a start. If the tide turns (which it does every now and then) we will all have a new perspective. bystanderbill (Wexford) - Posts: 53 - 30/04/2024 10:23:32 2541704 Link 0 |
Its the hope that kills us. Saturday is do or die if we can pull a performance out and somehow get a victory it gives us a chance. I feel there is more at stake for us than Galway and we should bring this passion and intensity to our performance

I like both hurling and football but I hope to god we don't return to the dark days of the late noughties early 2010s . We are on the verge of that at the moment which is sad to say. Our footballers never have caught the Wexford publics support like the hurlers do. At the height of the footballers we only got around 15k to support them for an All Ireland semi final where as the hurlers nearly got treble that support in 2019. That is why im desperate for a win saturday we need to keep hurling going in the county the thought of a relegation play off with Carlow is unthinkable

Looking at recent times Leinster football semi finals and finals aren't days that would inspire you too much, semi finals have to taken out of Croke Park at this stage really. As a said just personal experience I actually think there's alot of apathy towards football these days based on how risk averse the game has become, think the footballers improvement as mentioned is based on a group of players buying in and getting the most out of themselves under a well organised management.

We are now at the stage of real knockout hurling. All to play for. Can't wait for Saturday!

The 2009 League we were in div 2 but only lost once. To Antrim. We were div2 champions in 2010, beating Clare in the final. We only lost once that League too, to Carlow. Hope that's not an omen! 2011 we only just beat Cork to stay in div1. We ended up in div1b after Cork pulled strings though in 2012. And we lost to Antrim by 6 points that year. In Championship 2010 we got thrashed in the 1st round of the qualifiers by Tipp, while Antrim made it all the way through the qualifiers to an AIQF. In 2011 Antrim made it further than us in the qualifiers also. In 2012, Dunnes 1st season, we lost to Offaly in the 1st round in Leinster before we got thrashed in the 1st round of the qualifiers by Cork. We did start improving and being more competitive after that. We are nowhere near as bad as we were then. Viking66 (Wexford) - Posts: 15675 - 30/04/2024 11:33:49 2541731 Link 0 |
Me 2 viking to be honest i think with a small bit of luck we will make a leinster final still. The amount of work that has gone into this team has to pay off and starting with Saturday i think it will but its not for want of trying if we dont.Galway are Galway abit like ourselves you dont know till the game is on how theyll go and even then anything can happen. To me we are as good as anyone in Leinstet the problem is we can be as bad as anyone in Leinster too its just so puzzling.

As I said in a previous post the Westmeath draw in 2022 seems to have shook the team in the games where their either seen as favorites or 50/50 chance, 1 common pattern is the concession of late goals. 1 thing we did in Davy's tenure which I certainly didn't appreciate at the time is show the ruthless streak in games like Westmeath in 2022&23.

Richie Hogan made a good comparison. We are like a car with top gear, and bottom gear, but the gears in between are missing:-D

We need management and players to step up Saturday. Management firstly need to pick the right players to give us the best chance of winning the game. They need to then give the players the best game plan and instructions to give us the best chance. If anyone is not performing they need to be taken off there is no chances left anymore . Any player who is lucky enough to wear the purple and gold Saturday must first show passion and intensity that is the bear minimum. Then show quality that we are a good team and can compete with teams like Galway. If management and players can deliver this on Saturday us supporters who are there will get right behind them.

Davy had us playing to a defined system. It didn't leave space at the back. It's when lads get tired and we have less of a defined system we go back to the Wexford Way, hit aimless long balls forwards, stop tracking runners, stop running of the shoulder and then we lose our shape and are vulnerable to goals. Cost us in Leinster u20 final too with a man extra. Pressure comes on and our lads don't "stick to the process", lose our heads all over the pitch (and sideline) and start lashing it in. Any bit of composure down the stretch in last two games and we have three points extra on the board. Look at the goals conceded....Dublin second goal was a carbon copy of first, all defenders ball watching. Antrim second goal again McNaughton running through a non existent tackle from Reck. Nobody to blame but ourselves. But results aside, we are continuing to decline as a competitive county at this level. Clare for example will mostly likely annihilate the third placed Leinster team again this year. Timbertony (Wexford) - Posts: 398 - 30/04/2024 12:45:48 2541766 Link 0 |
Even though we had really bad luck with injuries Clare didn't annihilate us in Semple 2 years ago. Although barring a few more draws in Leinster we aren't likely to finish 3rd. It's #### or burst for us. If we win our last 3 we will likely be in the Final. Lose 1 we will likely be 4th. Lose 2 and we could be looking at Joe Mac if one of them is to Carlow, and lose all 3 we will be in the Joe Mac.

Puckout for Dublins goal should've been retaken. Ref never blew his whistle. And Mcnaughton took 8/9 steps for one of Antrims. Small margins. But yes I agree both games shouldn't have come down to that.
