Has anyone seen or know where the draft fixtures for the National Football and Hurling leagues are? Released yesterday I think.

Thanks for the link. I saw Martin Breheny had the 14 new football managers ranked so I read his piece also. He has John Hegarty in at 7. He's slightly mistaken about the outside managers for the last 20 years but is correct that it's going to be a tough job!

"Continue to portray the Allianz Hurling League as a mere testing ground for the championship while diminishing its status as a great competition is insulting to the winners and to the sponsors who have supported it down through the years."
The writer on the national hurling league got that right. Well past its best before date.

It's a good competition in its own right. Cody for example always tried to win it every year. But its not Championship Hurling.

Yes. Kilkenny won the NHL ten times under Cody.

But in alot of those years Kilkenny won an All-Ireland playing 4 championship games, 1 a month from June- September.

The round robin provincial championships have drastically changed how teams approach the league.

It's not meant to be, Of course it loses its importance as the inter county season is telescoped into a few months.

This year was proof that there was almost nothing to be gained by putting out anything like a team that was going to challenge in the championship.

Waterford were being talked up as potential challengers to Limerick and even Dublin had a good enough run although the hammering from the Cats that lost us a semi final was indicative of where the year was really going.

Even though there were people talking down Limerick at the time and their odds lengthened, Kirby and the boys knew exactly where they were in terms of panel and conditioning. The defeats they shipped in league were meaningless other than allowing them to try out marginal players and give established fellas a bit of a leg stretch.

Be a pity if league does become on par with the pre-season competitions as it has produced some good hurling over the years, and our only national success since God was a boy,

What do you suggest replace it then?

The round robin provincial championships haven't drastically changed how teams approach the league. Most teams weren't taking the league seriously before the round robin format was introduced.

I'd disagree a bit, absolutely it never was or never will be as important as championship, but I believe in the decade or so 2007-2017 a good or bad league was usually an indicator of a good or bad championship for a team. Now its as much of an indicator as the Walsh Cup, Limerick's league this year being the perfect example. I still think it's important in lower divisions with promotion and relegation on the line and for the teams in division 1 who aim is to avoid relegation.

I'm not sure that's exactly true. Most counties took it seriously for what it was. The secondary competition in the season. And tbh all the counties bar Limerick gave it a reasonable shot this year also. For what it was. Especially the group stages. The knockout stages being so close to the Round Robin maybe affected them a bit ok but I'm sure the Waterford lads were very happy to have won it when they won. Ok it seemed to impact on their championship season but then you have to remember a reality- Waterford have only won 1 Round Robin game ever, the win over Tipp this year, regardless how they did in the League.

One National competition with divisions that includes promotion and relegation starting in March. Ten teams in the premier giving the teams who would be now regarded weaker more meaningful games against top opposition as well as teams of their own level. The top six going to the play offs (knockouts). First and second semi-finals and the next four quarter finals. Bottom team relegated and top team from the second division promoted. The second last team play the second team division one to stay up or be replaced. The same down the divisioins.
This way you have eight teams fighting for something and there should be a minium of dead rubbers. It would take 9 playing weeks but should be done over 12 giving a break after every two games. If weather stops games that is a break week anyway and the can go back to back again. You would be at the play off by May and finished completely in time for the club championship. Anyone that says there is any thing meaningful about the league ask Limerick. As for trying out players there are more training staff than the united nations with several days a week looking at players. Inter squad and a a few limited preseason. Anyway if everyone is trying out players how important and how good is the assessment. Inferior opposition.

The league is the main competition for 24 teams in football, realistically its their only real chance at silverware, the provincial championships for those 24 are in the middle as a gap and then there is 16 of the 24 with a chance to win the Tailteann Cup.

Hurling league is a great competition for blooding a few new recruits something wexford never did when Davy was in charge.

He didn't so much at the start but I remember seeing a load of players play league games under Davy at the games I was at especially in his last 2 Leagues. Most didn't become regular championship starters but a few might in time.

Viking66 you know yourself lots of good club players but also know they are not inter county standard. Anymore with the coaching at under age level it is not so difficult to scout out these players. It is highly unlikely anyone who has not made underage county and that level of coaching and competition they will make it to senior. However the are exceptions to all rules and the odd one may fall through the cracks.
A great example of that is the NHL where junior A (amateur with maybe some school expenses. I believe $50 a week)the main feeder to the pro game, something like 1% or less make it. It is under age also with thousands playing and 10s of thousands trying to make it to that level. What surprises about that is the 99% who don't make it really end up only playing non competitive recreational as adults. I think the GAA is well set up to get the best players playing at the highest level with the club game and under age. While it always takes time for a new player to get up to the speed of the next level I would expect that it to be much more refined and a lot more predictable who can play at the top level.
