Replying To ctowers:  "Great contest and enjoyed seeing how happy westmeath were to win it . Probably slightly harsh red but westmeath deserved the win . A great addition to the gaa year as teams from divisions 3/4 have a great final to aim for . To see the westmeath players and fans after the win gives a good incentive for teams outside the top divisions that putting the effort in all year gives a chance for a cup final in croker. Fair pkag to the gaa for backing the competition."
Straight red all day long

Replying To thegadfly:  "Wrong. Cavan have better players and should win if they play to their potential. Whether or not that happens is another issue. Tighten up at the back, put McLoughlin on Heslin and Cavan should win."
Westmeath the fitter more purposefull team cavan carrying a few passengers maybe the favourites tag didnt suit yis

It shows league placing does tend to tell the truth of where a team is at. On paper and through the media you'd think Cavan were a cert to win this competition. However congratulations to Westmeath, they were the better side and fully deserved their win. They'll take their place in Senior group stages next season with at least one big game in Mullingar, great achievement for them.

Today shows Cavan football is not on a par with Division 1 and most of Division 2 teams as many claim, they're a long way back. They'll have a challenge to win promotion next season but that might not be enough to qualify for the senior championship through league placing, big set back. But this is Westmeath's day and an exciting 2023 ahead for football in the county.

A great win for Westmeath, winners of the inaugural Tailteann Cup. The sending off affected Cavan, Westmeath scored 1-2 in closing stages. A big night in the Lake County. Congratulations to all.

Never a red card unless you just want football with absolutely no contact at all …. First goal was a clear throw and a blatant touch of the ball on the ground…..

Agreed, the Cavan player was already committed for a shoulder and there was no intent, Westmeath player fumbled the ball and changed his whole body shape as a result, it looked worse in slow motion but in real time never in a million years was it a red, a yellow card and get on with it...

Unfortunate how it played out but he made contact with the head of course he has to go.. and if had been a Westmeath player I'd have said the same!

Read the playing rules of football re playing the ball on the ground when you're knocked or fall when in possession.

]Oh give over will you. Westmeath the better team and deserved it. It was reckless from Galligan.
First Westmeath goal was apparently legit according to the rules ( although those same rules should have applied to Peter Canavan years ago)

So you are allowed touch the ball on the ground and then play it on the ground and throw the ball as well…. All new rules …

Well done Westmeath and great scenes in Mullingar last night.
That red card was correct for a dangerous reckless shoulder into the chest.

Westmeath were always in with a great shout. Cavan probably came in on a more positive provincial performance. Many would see Cavan's low league ranking as a false status caused by underperforming. It was a good position for Westmeath who went about their business diligently. Both counties brought a lot to the final. Both should be able to kick on and gain promotion to Division 2.

congratulation to westmeath very deserving winners on the day and what a great competition the Tailteann cup has been the standard of football has been much better than in the sam maguire cup look at the manure in the second match yesterday. It will only go from strength to strength and there will be an even bigger buy into it next year. What team would not want to win it. If truth was know every team apart from kerry Dublin Mayo and Tyrone would be delighted to win it as they have not a hope in hell of winning the sam maguire. if only the ostrich had took its head out of the sand a decade ago but we still need a senior intermediate and junior competition.
