Why isn't Boland involved now ? Towey is a lovely player but too small for the business end of Championship which is where you are hoping to be

He stepped away himself.

I thought I read an article where he said he got dropped and he was going to concentrate on hurling this year
eoinog (Sligo) - Posts: 1504 - 09/07/2023 11:53:51
In a January he told the media McStay dropped him off the panel.
"It's up to me now if I want to force my way back onto the panel, it's as simple as that. And you just have to be completely honest with yourself. You're just going to have to get better as a player and play well for your club and then hopefully force your way back next year"
Gaa_lover (USA) - Posts: 3245 - 09/07/2023 12:46:37
Jeez I totally misread that. I had heard he was frustrated at the lack of game time the past couple of years and was focusing on hurling. Never saw that statement.
TheFlaker (Mayo) - Posts: 7698 - 09/07/2023 13:30:08
Too small, in Chicago he was marked by the Tyrone corner back and scored 1-16 or something like that given that 9 of them were frees but still scores, remember Mayo missed some easy frees. Now anyone that has any idea about GAA in the US knows that its a hell of a lot more physical than at home. There's other players in Mayo that haven't got a look in either, we've made poor use of the league. It seemed that winning it was the most important and not searching out new talent. The brains of the operation have 7 months or so to come up with a plan for another battle for SAM.

Name the players?
TheFlaker (Mayo) - Posts: 7698 - 15/07/2023 12:28:02
We played loads of new players in the league. Reape, Coyne, McBrien and Callinan got their first run of games with the Mayo senior team. Tuohy and Donnacha McHugh also got plenty of game time.
That's not even counting the Monaghan league game where it was nearly all extended panel members playing.
MayoDan (Mayo) - Posts: 409 - 17/07/2023 14:00:53
GAA in the US is nowhere near as intense or as physical as here. I have watched several games and they are fairly harmless. You have lads over for a few weeks and they don't treat it nearly as seriously as they should. Thats not to say that there is not the occasional overly robust tackle , but the intensity is way behind.
anotheralias (Galway) - Posts: 796 - 17/07/2023 14:18:17
I recall the 1-16 he scored in the QF in Chicago. But I dont recall him scoring at all ( certainly not from play) in the Semi Final of the same competition.
He is definitely a super super player , but ironically I think the point you made about his US performance supports the theory that he is a fantastic footballer at a particular level. I'm not saying that he isn't county material but his effectiveness is reduced when marked by a very strong, very quick player , the likes of whom you are more likely to encounter at IC level. The Tyrone corner back may have been in a more generous mood than when wearing a Tyrone jersey.
I hope that I am proved wrong and he does make a big breakthrough next year because he is a lovely footballer to watch.
anotheralias (Galway) - Posts: 796 - 17/07/2023 17:04:23
A lovely player but a touch too Small is my opinion of him. No player goes out to America to play serious football. It's a break from the routine here, a different job, bit of touring, loads of pints and play a few games for fun. Mediocre standard . All a bit of fun and craic.

Mayo Intermediate Football Championship Round 1:
Davitts V Parke/Keelouges/Crimlin
10 months ago Davitts should have been rewarded a replay after a draw relegation final V The Neale instead it went to penalties while Neale won but there was no panic getting the game out of the way and no team deserved to be relegated by foreign rule of penalties shootout.
Parke/K/C have lost midfielder Jack McLoughlin to injury. Ronan Carolan, Seanie Corcoran & Sean Sweeney main men up front.
Colm Boyle now corner forward and big Ronan McNamara is between the sticks.
Parke/K/C by 1
Islandeady V Bonniconlon
Islandeady return to Intermediate after a 2 year absence and during there previous stint in Intermediate 2012-2020 they were poor while I expected them to do better.
Veteran and former Mayo Peter Collins still going, Darragh Joyce up front and last year Mayo U20 goalkeeper Bryan O'Flaherty (excellent in last year JFC final).
Bonniconlon also have been very poor in Intermediate since 2004 with only once coming out of the group stages 2020 quarter final hammered by Hollymount/Carramore. Niall Egan is back from USA, Ronan Neary up front and Richard McKenzine in midfield.
Islandeady by 3.
Kilmeena V Ardnaree Sarsfields
An excellent 2021-2022 season for Kilmeena winning the All-Ireland JFC and eventually losing last year IFC final V Ballyhaunis.
Kilmeena had a good break to refresh for this year Jack Carney, Darragh Keaveaney and John McGlynn up front.
Ardnaree have been poor since promotion to IFC in 2016 and narrowly avoided relegation last year by Lahardane. Former Mayo player Michael Walsh and Martin Rafter main man.
Kilmeena by 4.
Kiltimagh V Louisburgh (Venue COE Bekan)
It's been a poor year for both teams.
Kiltimagh have lost home advantage (Gilmartin Park under redevelopment) relegation from Division 1 hammered in every game failing to score a single goal. Need a big performances by Cillian Finn, Sean Walsh by long serving Brian Gallagher. Louisburgh just about avoided the Division 2 relegation playoffs. Padraig Prendergast (OZ) huge loss but Dylan Prendergast and Kevin Gibbons main men.
John Kelly back for a 2nd spell after a successful 1st spell winning the 2016 Mayo JFC.
Louisburgh by 1
Kiltane V Hollymount/Carramore
Kiltane struggled in last year IFC and badly missed former Mayo footballer Mikie Sweeney and Cathal Carey due to injuries but are both back.
Ultan Corrigan & John Reilly still going strong. Hollymount/Carramore with the Coens cousins and veteran Kevin Feerick & Conor Heneghan key players.
Kiltane by 2.
Burrishoole V Ballinrobe
Burrishoole having a poor year narrowly avoided relegation to Division 3 after beating a poor The Neale team. Fintan McManamon and recently retired Mayo player Jason Doherty main men.
Ballinrobe who are many experts favourite for this year IFC title. Evan O'Brien and Darren McDonald key players.
Ballinrobe by 3.
Crossmolina Deel Rovers V Kilmaine
Deel Rovers intermediate since 2019 have failed to get past beyond the quarterfinals stage each year. Jordan Flynn blossomed as a Mayo player need to bring his county form to club. Last year Mayo minor James Maheady with Fionan Duffy up front.
Kilmaine having a poor year relegation from Division 2 beating by Killala 6 points at home not good for morale. Oisin Mullen is huge loss but brother Jarlath Mullen is dangerous up front with Michael Hession.
Castlebar Mitchells B V Bohola Moy Davitts
To predict the IFC winners this year is hard to pick but to know who playing for Mitchells B outfit is even harder to know and a dangerous scenario for BMD. After all last year IFC champions Ballyhaunis were 9 points down by Mitchells by HT and finish the game with a draw and the final group game BMD only beat Mitchells by 1.
Lots of promising talents in Foxford with Cian McHale, Conor Reid and Brian Heneghan.
Bohola Moy Davitts by 3.

Mayo Excusive Junior Football Championship Round 1.
Northern Gaels V Ballycastle
An first game for the new amalgamation of Kilfian & Lacken this year and they having a decent season with no cups winning promotion to Division 3 and losing the North JFC B final to Bonniconlon B. Joe Kelly and the Bolands players will be the main men.
Ballycastle are having a disastrous year relegation to Division 4 and only won 1 game all year. Not sure is the Forde brothers still available.
Kevin Healy & Ciaran McDonnell are the key players.
Northern Gaels by 3
Tourmakeady V Shrule/Glencorrib
Both team's operating from Division 3 and met already in Lough mask with Shrule/Glencorrib winning 2-6 0-14.
Tourmakeady are just a stable Junior team while Shrule/Glencorrib would be one of my favourite to win this year JFC with Evan Cawley, Ronan Warde & Kevin Ryan to watch out.
Shrule/Glencorrib by 5
Cill Chomain V Ardagh
Cill Chomain have lost the last 2 finals and remain one of the favourites for the JFC.
2022 Mayo FBD Justin Healy is out for the year a huge loss. Still good forwards in veteran Derek Moran, David Walker and Jason Murray.
Ardagh have been flying since James Carr return from Mayo duty winning the Mayo SFL Division 3 title recently. The Carrs brothers, Stephen Rochford and Lee Traynor key men.
Cill Chomain by 4.
Eastern Gaels V Kilmovee Shamrocks
2 local rivals go at it.
Eastern Gaels lost the quarter final last year by Shrule/Glencorrib and narrowly avoided the relegation playoffs in Division 3 but are in the MW Junior cup final.
Kilmovee Shamrocks have been struggling in this level and narrowly missed out promotion back to Division 3.
Eastern Gaels by 5.
Ballycroy V Swinford (Venue Achill)
Ballycroy are holding there own for one of the smallest club in Mayo and will take great pride in playing for the jersey this weekend. Kevin Ginty, Stephen & Raymond Grealis key men.
Swinford who were hot favourites in last year JFC failed to get past the quarterfinals by losing to Killala after AET. Liam Moran key man for Swinford.
Remains to be seen whether Swinford good enough for the title.
Swinford by 5.
Moygownagh V Lahardane MacHales
Two north Mayo rivals.
Moygownagh another small club who have been struggling and reach last year Exclusive B final losing to Achill.
Oran Gallagher and Mayo masters Gary Carey still going strong for Moygownagh.
Lahardane return to Junior after 5 seasons in Intermediate will be aiming to get back up but they haven't been playing well failing to come out of Division 3. Adrain Leonard back from injury Barry Leonard full back was playing in goals recently.
Lahardane MacHales by 8.

Mayo Senior Football Championship Round 1.
Breaffy V Ballina Stephenites
Breaffy I believe have miss the boat for winning the SFC having lost 4 finals in the past decade. Robert Hennelly transferred and new goalkeeper Jack Livingston is excellent replacement. Seamus O'Shea retired. Davitt Neary one of the new crop.
Ballina to go 1 step better from last year I believe they will be in the mix 1 year older and wiser with the Irwin's, Evan Regan & Mikey Murray (if not injury)
Ballina Stephenites by 3.
Mayo Gaels V Balla
A true local derby clash and they both met in the 2020 IFC Quarter Final which Balla prevail so credit to both teams they are now Senior but one of them need to win to avoid relegation playoffs later on in this tough group.
Balla Barry Duffy and 2013-2016 minor/U21 winners Val Roughnan/Matty Flanagan. Mayo Gaels Ethan Henry and John Gallagher key men.
Mayo Gaels by 1.
Claremorris V Ballaghaderren
Claremorris a team who have been dominant at underage levels A titles failed to make any impact at Senior only 2 Semi Finals in the past 15 years 2008 and 2017. Ballaghaderren have fallen behind to since there 2019 final defeat. It's a 50/50 game as both teams need to make a statement this year.
James Shaugnessy main man up front for Claremorris while Cian Hanley for Ballagaderren.
Claremorris by 3.
Westport V Charlestown Sarsfields
Westport have been putting up cricket scores in the league and with Lee Keegan back full time it would lift the club team standards at training. Charlestown are a hard championship team to beat and won't roll over.
Charlestown with Paul Towey and Jack Mahon up front. Westport Moran's brother Mark & Colm (who was ineligible for last year's championship success) along with Killian Kilkelly and Co.
Westport by 5.
The Neale V Ballintubber
The Neale are having a torrid year relegation to Division 3 for next year and just about stayed up last year by winning on penalties V Davitts relegation final. Tommy Conroy should be ready along with Steven Conroy and long serving Sean Cosgrove.
Ballintubber still haven't gone away from the pack with the O'Connors, Jason Gibbons, Stephen O'Malley and Michael Plunkett (if not Injury)
Ballintubber by 5.
Belmullet V Garrymore
Belmullet like Ardagh since James Carr and Ryan O'Donoghue returning to there respective clubs have boost the team morale having won the Division 2 title and ROD scoring 1-6 consistently. Fionn Ryan midfield and new rookie forward in Anthony Barrett.
Garrymore the 2nd longest Senior club in Mayo since 1969 with no shop or pub in the village it's amazing achievement how a small club keep the standard up. They are hard beaten with the Nally brothers Trevor/Shane and the last 2 years beaten by eventual winners Knockmore & Westport.
Knockmore V Castlebar Mitchells
Knockmore find Castlebar a true bogey team since Castlebar returned to Senior in 2006 Knockmore have failed to beat them in 9 meetings 8 defeats and 1 draw in 2007. Knockmore with the McHales crew David/Shane/Darren and Kieran King (if not injury).
Castlebar are quickly building a new team again with the Tuohy brothers, Paddy Heneghan and Ethan Gibbons.
Knockmore by 1.
Aghamore V Ballyhaunis
Aghamore 15th season as a Senior club and have been surviving there Senior status most seasons. Alan Freeman recently playing for B team Division 5 success so will he be available for this year. Fergal Boland I believe he should not been dropped by Mayo last year.
Ballyhaunis returned to Senior after a 7 year absence and nothing can motivate them more by playing local rivals in there own backyard with the Coyne brothers Jason/Jack and Morgan Lyons.
Ballyhaunis by 1.

Round 3 kicks off this weekend, a few games with nothing on the line but still a lot to be settled this weekend.
Balla vs Ballina in Foxford on Saturday @ 3pm:
Ballina are top and Balla are in relegation, that much we know for sure. I'd expect both teams to rotate 3 or 4 lads to test out some of the subs. Doubt you will get many neutrals heading to this one!
Ballina by 6
Breaffy vs Mayo Gaels in Ballindine on Saturday @ 3pm:
Simply put, if Breaffy win or draw, they qualify. Mayo Gaels need the win here. Gaels suffered a heavy defeat in Round 2 losing by 10 points in Ballina, while Breaffy beat Balla by 3 away from home. The formbook would say Breaffy should win handy. However, we saw Charlestown get a 23 point hammering in Round 1 vs Westport and then bounce back to beat Claremorris by 4 in Round 2, so I dont know if we should chalk this one down as an easy Breaffy win. Breaffy have lost some big names over the years, Seamus O'Shea, Liam Irwin, Rob Hennelly to name a few, and they may not be the beast they were in the 2010s. Potential for our first major upset in this year's championship here. Its on MayoGAATV so it'll be a good one to tune into on your Saturday afternoon.
Gaels by 1
Claremorris vs Westport in Breaffy on Sunday @ 2:30pm:
Similar to Balla vs Ballina, Westport are top and Claremorris are bottom, all the action in this group will be in Ballyhaunis for the other game. Cant see much past a Westport win here.
Westport by 8
Charlestown vs Ballaghaderreen in Ballyhaunis on Sunday @ 4pm:
This one could be a classic. Charlestown need the win to qualify, Ballagh have the draw on their side. Ballagh frustrated Westport for 40 odd minutes in Round 2 but lost by 4 in the finish, while Charlestown beat a porous Claremorris team by 4. A local derby with qualification to the quarters on the line. Towey wasnt as influential as usual vs Claremorris after returning from suspension, which will concern Charlestown. Ballagh have lost some big names over the past few years but I think a tight defence could squeeze them over the line. Ryan Lynch vs Matthew Leneghan in midfield could be worth the ticket fee alone. This game is also on MayoGAATV, if you dont want to go out and face the elements.
Ballaghaderreen by 2
Belmullet vs The Neale in Castlebar on Sunday @ 2pm:
The shock of all shocks could put Belmullet into relegation, if Garrymore get a win/draw vs Ballintubber and The Neale beat Belmullet. I doubt many people even in Cong are confident of getting a win here however. Its been a tough 2 seasons for The Neale, who look like a cat who have used up 8 lives already. Belmullet need to win to keep them in the hunt for the quarter finals, so I dont expect them to ease up here.
Belmullet by 8
Ballintubber vs Garrymore in Hollymount on Sunday @ 2pm:
A real heavyweight clash here. Two strong senior teams who are a little bit on the older side these days. These teams know each other well, and recently played a league quarter final in Garrymore where the hosts won after extra time. Both teams appear to cancel each other out quite well, with Gary Golden and ShaneNally midfield vs DOC and Jason Gibbons. Garry's forwards havent set the world alight so far in the championship, with a lot of scores coming from defenders. Another game shown live on MayoGAATV. I cant split this game.
Ballyhaunis vs Castlebar Mitchels in Claremorris on Saturday @ 5pm:
This group might look settled but one result could change everything. If Ballyhaunis can get a win here, with Knockmore beating Aghamore, then Ballyhaunis qualify and Mitchels are out. Scoring difference is going against Ballyhaunis after a 16 point defeat vs Knockmore, so they need a big performance here to stay out of relegation. Eoghan Collins and James Lyons are reportedly still sidelined, but rumours indicate that Keith Higgins is back for this game, which will be a huge lift to them. Mitchels need to improve on form shown vs Aghamore if they want to go far in the championship, and should be too strong for Ballyhaunis.
Castlebar Mitchels by 7
Knockmore vs Aghamore in Charlestown on Saturday @ 5pm:
The fourth game shown live on MayoGAATV this weekend sees a familiar fixture show up. This is the third year running where Knockmore play Aghamore in the group stage, with Knockmore winning both previous encounters at home by 6 points. This time around, its neutral venue, and Aghamore looked to have a mean defence vs Castlebar. They will be gutted to have conceded a goal within minutes of getting a goal of their own to take the lead vs Castlebar, and I fear that they put a lot of energy into the Castlebar game. Knockmore look to be timing their gallop well, having embarrassed Ballyhaunis on their first home game back in the big time, winning 2-15 to 0-05.

Mayo Senior Football Championship Round 3:
Breaffy V Mayo Gaels (Venue: Ballindine)
Definitely a match I be very interested to see.
Breaffy are not the same team as the 2013-2021 era.
Mayo Gaels may have overly focused on the derby game V Balla and then came flat V Ballina.
Mayo Gaels have to get refocused for this game to have a chance to upset Breaffy and stop them for reaching the quarterfinals for the first time since 2012.
Breaffy by 3.
Ballina Stephenites V Balla (Venue: Foxford)
Ballina have the job done by reaching the quarterfinals so again getting through at ease with a performance and no injuries.
Balla are destined for 3rd year in a row in the relegation play offs but I believe they be playing Senior football again for 2024.
Ballina Stephenites by 6.
Westport V Claremorris (Venue: Breaffy)
The same scenario as above Ballina V Balla with the teams have bigger fish to fry respectively for the upcoming quarter finals and relegation play offs for Claremorris.
Westport by 5.
Ballaghaderren V Charlestown Sarsfields (Venue: Ballyhaunis)
Whether they hate or love against each other it's winner takes all for the 2 East Mayo neighbours.
Ballaghaderren looks like the best bet beating Claremorris by 3 and running Westport close which was level 7 times.
Charlestown hammered by Westport in round 1 improved for round 2 to beat Claremorris.
Ballaghaderren by 2.
Ballintubber V Garrymore (Venue: Hollymount)
Ballintubber are on 4 points while Garrymore are on 2 points so if Garrymore win and Belmullet beat the Neale it's all go down to scoring difference.
Garrymore are a well established Senior championship club since 1969 so will be fighting to start well.
With Cillian O'Connor absent V Belmullet they still beat Belmullet without him.
Garrymore by 1.
Belmullet V The Neale (Venue: Castlebar)
Belmullet failed to beat Ballintubber away even without Cillian O'Connor was a set back.
The Neale having a poor year haven't won league/championship game. Belmullet need to simply win and easy.
Belmullet by 6.
Knockmore V Aghamore (Venue: Charlestown)
Knockmore blitz Ballyhaunis in their own backyard while Aghamore pushed Castlebar all the way and may feel they left it behind to grab a draw or even a win.
Knockmore by 5.
Castlebar Mitchells V Ballyhaunis (Venue: Claremorris)
2021 Intermediate champion Ballyhaunis looks like they are going to be in the relegation play offs unless they can pull off a shock victory. Keith Higgins, Eoghan Collins & Lyons were huge losses for Ballyhaunis in their defeat V Knockmore.
Castlebar got a fright V Aghamore so a good wake up call.
Castlebar Mitchells by 6.

Mayo Intermediate Championship Round 3:
Bonniconlon V Parke/Keelouges/Crimlin (Venue: Bofeenaan)
Both teams in the opposite direction in the table.
Parke/K/C have 1 eye for the quarter final and getting through this game with no injuries. Bonniconlon once again destined for the relegation playoffs and usually come out of it.
Parke/K/C by 5.
Islandeady V Davitts (Venue: Clogher)
Definitely Intermediate game of the weekend to attend to.
Davitts are under pressure in there 1st year back in Intermediate while Islandeady have nothing to lose but all to gain in there 1st year up in Intermediate.
Islandeady by 2.
Kilmeena V Kiltimagh (Venue: Islandeady)
It was reported that Kilmeena defeat V Louisburgh was a shock but it was no shock to me as Louisburgh are very good.
Kilmeena need to win simple as while Kiltimagh as I said before are having a terrible year need to get there act fast.
Kilmeena by 5.
Louisburgh V Ardnaree Sarsfields (Venue: Newport)
Louisburgh have been one of my favourite for the IFC title during 2017-2020 era and taken a slight in recent years but seems to be focusing and improving attitude according to manager John Kelly interview on Mayo news.
Ardnaree simply have to win but it's a step to far.
Louisburgh by 3.
Burrishoole V Kiltane (Crossmolina)
Both teams had a disappointing first round defeats to Ballinrobe and Hollymount/Carramore respectively but improved in round 2.
Both teams simply need to win to avoid the relegation playoffs.
Kiltane by 3.
Ballinrobe V Hollymount/Carramore (Venue: Garrymore)
Both teams are through the quarterfinals so a case of getting through this game no injuries.
Also both teams could meet again later for a crack at the title.
Hollymount/Carramore by 2.
Castlebar Mitchells B V Crossmolina Deel Rovers (Venue: Knockmore)
Castlebar B put up a big score against out of sorts Kilmaine with former Senior experience campaigner Ray O'Malley.
Castlebar B have still not yet reached the last 8 of the IFC since coming up in 2020 so they could be first B team to reach the quarter final since of course there opponent Crossmolina B back in 2007-2008.
Crossmolina looks the better bet and probably on par with Moy Davitts only for playing away to them.
Crossmolina Deel Rovers by 3.
Kilmaine V Bohola Moy Davitts (Venue: Mayo Abbey)
Oisin Mullen has been given the go ahead to play for Kilmaine by AFL authorities but it's 4 weeks to late as Kilmaine are already destined for the relegation play offs.
Discipline must be improved as well as they finish the game with 11 players V Castlebar B and need all players in bay not suspended for the upcoming relegation playoffs.
Bohola Moy Davitts big win V Crossmolina in round 2 but conceded 2-11 which would lose you most games.
Bohola Moy Davitts by 4.
