Replying To FootballRising:  "Good predictions, any thoughts on intermediate fixtures?"
I will also agree with Victorious 87's predictions. To me the tie of the weekend might be An Tochair v Avondale. An Tochair have a very young, talented side in the main while Avondale also have Cullen, Oisin McGraynor, Conor Byrne and a few other talented youngsters plus they are a big side albeit one which plays football.
Intermediate I think
Eire Og will be too strong for Kilmac. I think the Greystones club have won 2 or 3 minors in the last few years and some of these must be coming through to mix with some experienced stalwarts.
Barndarrig have a few nice footballers and have made great strides in recent years for a one time hurling stronghold but Valleymount can never be underestimated in championship. I give them the nod here.
Ballymanus and Strat/Grangecon to me are evenly matched with a hesitant nod to the Billies.
Coolkenno and Annacurra to me is another trappy affair. This is one where you would keep your money in your pocket normally but, again an even more hesitant nod to Annacurra. They have always had a tradition of producing some decent footballers - as indeed do Coolkenno, but on balance, it's Annacurra by a nose.

Good to see a competitive championship. Curious as to your thoughts on what could be seen as a Wexford invasion into management teams at all levels in wicklow, lot of Wexford eyes on the respective coaches and teams. Anthony Masterson in Arklow, Paul Morris in Ballinacor, Lloyd Colfer in Avondale, James Flood in Newtown, is there many more that you would know of from Wexford involved with teams or is there more missing?

Replying To Victorious87:  "Reallly looking forward to the championship getting underway this weekend. There's two games that I think will be extremely close.

An Tochair v Avondale - I think An Tochair will cause a shock here, I've seen them a few times in the last 12 months and they're the best team to come up from Intermediate in a good while, probably since AGB.

Bray v Kiltegan - so hard to know what either team will be like in championship each year. The fact that it's coming off two weeks of hurling makes it even harder to know. Kiltegan are a championship team and I think they may just edge it.

AGB v Dunlavin - AGB had a good league but I think they've shown over the last few years that they can be flakey and Dunlavin have shown they're an established senior side but I think AGB should win with a bit to spare.

Donard v Tinahely - Donard were brilliant last year and love being underdogs but Tinahely should win comfortably if they want to be taken seriously this year."
You wont be far off with those calls. Looking forward to football startring. Have not seen any hurling but read about it in Wicklow people. Good coverage lately and decent previews too.

It's amusing the way that the media regard the "minnows" in their coverage. I saw recently an article on I think it was "Joe" saying there were 9 (could have this number wrong) footballing managerial vacancies. Wicklow didn't figure. Today I see on the same publication that there are 5 hurling vacancies - again no mention of Wicklow. Maybe they know something that we don't.

I read in the paper that Blessington got to the semi finals of the All Ireland 7s last weekend. I know it's only a preseason competition but it's pretty impressive and good to see Wicklow clubs competing well. They beat Ballyboden on the way too!

I saw that also and had intended congratulating Blessington on their exploits. It is indeed good to see our county teams starting to flex their muscles. Hopefully things will only get better. It will be interesting to see if they can build on last years success. It does look like being an exciting championship this year. Whatever about the standard, there are more teams who could win it this time than has been the case for a year or two in my opinion.

I know they won handsomely tonight but how is a club the size of greystones playing in the intermediate grade? Grossly underachieving along with Bray.

I would say their stay in Intermediate will be a short one. Like I said in an earlier post, they did win around 3 minors in recent years so they must have many good players coming through.

A couple of surprises over the weekend. I suppose Donards win possibly the stand out one ? I was at the Avondale v An Tochair game. Probably the final score flattered the Dales. There is much to admire about the way the Roundwood men set about their business. Even given their inexperience, they will be a handful for anybody. It's early days yet and they could end up in a relegation dogfight still but there is something about them. The intermediate games went along broadly expected lines. I would imagine that whoever wants to win the championship will have to deal with Eire Og. You'd have to wonder what went wrong last year for them to end up in the lower grade. The West looks strong as ever. Next weekend will tell us more about that but I just have a feeling that Miley will be parked up somewhere on the far side of the hills for the winter again. To me, Balto with KO'B driving them on will take watching.

I called 6 out of 8 matches over the weekend correctly, happy with that. It was a very interesting weekend.

Tinahely look like they'll be fighting relegation again this year. Shocking result for them considering Donard are in Division 2 and people regard Tinahely as candidates for winning Miley. I think they'll be some serious soul searching going on there. Brilliant result for Donard, they really are a fantastic club considering the lack of population they have to draw from.

I was right about An Tochair, I've seen them a few times in the flesh and they're a very good side. They've been handed the hardest draw of the lot in the next round so it'll be interesting to see how the compare against the best.

AGB will have to improve a lot for next weekend. It's a really hard start for the defending champions in Blessington as well. Definitely the game of the weekend and I'm going to try get out to it.

What's gone wrong in Tinahely?. Two years ago it seems that they were really on the verge of establishing themselves as a long term contender with their underage success starting to filter through into the Senior Set-up, Good Management in place, County Final appearance. They'd have to be disappointed with how things have progressed since that County Final.

Why wasn't Eoin Darcy playing nor even a substitute yesterday? It seems that since Tinahely got to the final they are regressing year on year. It will be interesting to see how An Tochar as they will be stepping up in the next round.

Interesting games over the weekend. An Tochar are a very well managed and set out team full of confidence and speed. I think the game v Pats will be worth a watch! Was very happy to see Donard get the win given the size of the club...Tinahealy will be kicking themselves. They look good going forward but there is no full back line to talk about. Bray looked fairly good although Kitegan were all over the shop especially in the half backs if Cunningham didn't miss at least two glaring goal chances in the first chances it could have been over after 15 minutes! Didn't see the AGB game but looks like they are going well....I'm looking forward to the second round games!

Kevin Quinn out for the rest of the year I hear from Blessington. Cant see them win it without him as well as the O Connors missing as well. Reckon arklow will beat them.

First timer on the Forum here but I have an avid interest in the club scene in Wicklow and interesting in getting the opinions of others.

Interesting start to the championship with senior, I was at all four games in the senior, Looking forward to the weekend action. Not sure if we will see many shocks,

Intermediate did not really have many surprises; Eire Og seem far ahead of the rest.

Sorry to hear that Kevin Quinn is out for the rest of the year. I think he is the best footballer in the county presently so a player of his calibre is a huge loss to any team. Plus Blessington have a tough draw in the second round against AGB who were impressive in their win over Dunlavin. If Kevin Quinn was available, I would fancy Blessington to get through to the next round, as it is with this news, I would sway towards AGB. The most interesting tie of the next round is St. Pats; a team that is probably coming towards the end of their run which has been hugely successful against probably the upcoming team in An Tochar. I would have to go for St. Pats but Wicklow football needs a new team to add to the mix and for that reason I hope An Tochar can pull it off. It did look as though Tinahely were the team that would challenge St. Pats, Baltinglass etc a few years ago but they appear to be on the slide. I would expect Baltinglass to be too strong for Donard/Glen but Donard/Glen are not without a chance. Of course Rathnew can never be ruled out but they would need to improve on last year's performances if they want to challenge for honours but I do, based upon history expect them to beat Bray Emmets.

That's interesting, someone else had mentioned that Blessington had a been having a difficult time but didn't go into any details. They're huge players to be missing. Will they be gone for the year?
