In other news, I see the football revolution in Tipperary continues unabated spearheaded by our ex-pat coaching guru. Liam Cahill will be under serious pressure to hold onto some of his hurlers for the Munster Championship and stop them defecting to football!

Hopefully, if Tipp decide to dispense with their services, they will move on to pastures new.

I see the County board has sent an ultimatum to clubs that if they don't provide refs then games will be forfeit.

Would they not just pay them more?!

Or not decide to put on loads more matches without a guaranteed number of referees !!!!!

I haven't seen anything on that yet. Not too sure how it would work. Referres can't referee their own club teams anyway so, what games would be forfeit ? Would it mean a blanket ban on all teams from a club ? I'm sure that would work out well. I can just see it. The amount of appeals even legals would be staggering. County board business would be at a standstill. I would like to think that whoever dreamed this has considered every angle, although, on the face of it, that would appear unlikely. Is there any provision for this in the Clar ? Or the infamous ByeLaws. During my time at county board meetings I was always amazed at how the Bye Laws trumped the official Clar. They brought obfuscation to a whole new level. There was always an ould guru or two in the background who were expert both rule books. This made them indispensable to an incoming green chairman or officer. That was where the real power resided and maybe still does.

I see it's aimed at juveniles - particularly at clubs with multiple teams entered in the same age groups. I think that is probably fair play

I believe the FAI are in dire need?

It is a pity that in a week when the county footballers recognised a noticeable victory against Westmeath in the leinster championship that a negative article appears on the hogan stand about problems within the county. I'm not here to blame the hogan stand by the way. I realise that a lack of referees volunteering has surfaced in other counties and is a GAA problem as oppose to just a Wicklow problem. Personally, I don't blame any right minded person for not volunteering to be a referee; respect for referees is a problem and has been an underlying problem within the GAA for years and nothing has been done to protect referees. So, is it any wonder that people don't want the job. I've said it before and I have no problem saying it again - anyone who physically assaults a referee should have no place in the organisation for a considerable period of time, one year minimum.

This is definitely not confined to a Wicklow.
With no deterrent or punishment of any real merit for assaulting (verbally or physically) a referee it'll continue to be an issue throughout the association.

I think, from memory, it was only first round fixtures that were at home, depending on the draw. Also, there is something about ground capacity. I don't think that Aughrim would have the capacity or expected capacity to host one of the "bigger?" teams. Well, that was back in the day. It hasn't been a problem for years now.

Well I live in Kildare and there is not a huge interest in Sunday from what I can see.

Looking at the four quarter finals in Leinster -

Dublin are at home to Meath in this one unless you believe Croke Park is neutral.
Laois are at home to Offaly
The other two quarter finals are in Portlaois. I can only assume that Kildare, Wicklow, Louth and Wexford's home grounds aren't up to the required standard to accommodate the crowd, although based upon attendances at matches I've been at recently, there would be plenty of room.

Nobody believes that Croker is neutral for the Dubs anymore - except the powers that be. They still insist on Parnell Park being the Dubs "home" ground. Smoke and Mirrors or to quote a former Taoiseach who was from that general area of Dublin " Smoke and Daggers". As regards attendances, there seems to be a rule ( written or otherwise ) that a county ground should have a minimum capacity in order to host a Leinster championship match. It used be the norm that first round games went to whichever county was drawn first out of the hat - and even then, their ground would have to have a minimum crowd capacity, because there was no seeding then, you could draw anyone. I don't know what the criteria is now, if there is one. More Smoke and Daggers.

I think geography has something to do with it. Portlaoise is fairly central. And number of seats. Carlow is fairly close to Wicklow and Kildare, but maybe hasn't enough seats. Wexford is not very central. Kildares grounds are being rebuilt, and I don't think Louth or Wicklows has the capacity.

Remember the shenanigans a few years ago when Laois were told they couldn't play at home because O'Moore park not being capable of handling the Dubs support. Some nonsense about season tickets being mentioned and then the following year Carlow and Dublin being fixed for, of course, O'Moore Park. GAA style logic at it's best.

I hear that Kildare spent a week long training camp on FOTA Island in preparation for the championship ? Well done them. No expense spared there. I'd imagine though that they would prefer to be still in Div 2, as indeed, we would prefer to have stayed up also. Any late word or whispers on our precarious financial position ?

We played Carlow at home last year so it would be hard to believe there is a firm rule that takes into account the size of a team's support (other than Dublin - who Wicklow played a "home" match against in 2018).

We played Westmeath in Tullamore in 2009 & 2010 so maybe there is a neutral venue agreement between the counties.

I think Portlaoise seems to be the second preference behind Croke Park for matches in the Leinster championship. As some one alluded to, it is probably based on the fact that it is central for a large number of counties in the Leinster region plus has the capacity. Also, I think the Leinster council have invested money in developing it not just in terms of Laois GAA but to host both hurling and football matches from a neutral perspective.
