Sligo really impressive yesterday especially in how they reacted to going 6 points down in Croke Park. The question around Murphy was how long he had in him, probably well short of 70 minutes. I think bringing him on when they did was the thing to do, you got it back to 2 points and had the best forward on the pitch at that stage. Getting out of Div 4 should be your main target next year along with winning the Tailteann - if you don't make a provincial final. You should be strong favourites for both.

I am well aware of that, it happens with every manager that lads won't play. They are 2 separate issues.

All in all a decent performance on Sunday. Lyons was outstanding as were Spillane & Murphy. Bit more belief...absent at the start & we could have won. tentonne (Sligo) - Posts: 68 - 21/06/2022 12:15:58 2426594 Link 0 |
"They (Cavan) ended up thrashed by Donegal" It was level up to the last 10 minutes and then Donegal scored 2 late goals from high balls which were lucky enough. No way could anyone who actually watched that game say that Cavan were trashed Sligo's whole game plan went out window against Roscommon after the sending off after 12 minutes when the score was 3 points to 2. We are better than that showing but a moment of stupidity ended the game as a contest. We have shown we have the ability to be competitive but the shooting in the last 3 games has been the worst I have ever seen from a Sligo team muscles (Sligo) - Posts: 396 - 21/06/2022 13:04:55 2426620 Link 0 |
Club draw made last night. What are peoples thoughts? Sligoman1234 (Sligo) - Posts: 243 - 21/06/2022 13:20:59 2426626 Link 0 |
Yes 15 v 15 would have made the Sligo v Roscommon game far closer. Roscommon haven't exactly set the world on fire since. Despite all the talk and a League title, Roscommon's win over Sligo was our only championship win in the last three years.

A sobering statistic from a Ros point of view. Yet no one seems to be questioning the set up. Seanfanbocht (Roscommon) - Posts: 769 - 22/06/2022 10:07:03 2426765 Link 0 |
Very early in the Year yet (even though we are passed mid simmers day) but Tourlestrane look to be every bit as powerful as they have been for the last few years. Blondie has stepped away but there is a ready made replacement in the O Donnell lad. Amazing that none of this team put a boot print on the Croke Park sod last weekend. They seem to be well ahead of the chasing pack but Curry won't fear them. Molaise are favourites for intermediate as is the norm over the last few years but they have constantly come up short. Intermediate is a big step down from Senior so I imagine you can write off at least half the teams in this year's competition. I do have a likening for Ballymote but I am also confident that they will press the self destruct button when things are tight. The Bunnies have a very good midfield and s few promising young players so I would give them a chance also. Too early for Harps yet. Good players also but not enough yet.The rest really are also rans !! eoinog (Sligo) - Posts: 1309 - 22/06/2022 17:56:08 2426915 Link 0 |
Yes it's hard to believe that not one Tour player played a part last weekend. I would agree with a lot regarding Intermediate, definitely Ballymote could be one to watch if they find consistency. But Easkey are not an also-ran, they will be hard beat. For Senior, Shamrock Gaels and Drumcliff should push the leading pack.

League predictions: Tour to win senior. Calry to go down. DRP and Curry to go up from intermediate. Enniscrone to be relegated. Championship: Group 1 - 1 and 2: Shamrock Gaels and Curry. - 3rd: St Mary's. - 4 and 5: Tubbercurry and Calry/St Joseph's. Group 2 - 1 and 2: Tourlestrane and Coolera/Strandhill - 3rd: St. Farnans - 4 and 5: DRP and C/M Winners: Tourlestrane Relegation: ? Mary's should avoid relegation with county players back. Curry will have no fear as eoinog has said. Shamrock Gaels are a dark horse. Farnans should be ok in their first year up. C/M struggling. DRP just unlucky in their group, won't be relegated. Tubber not gaining any county players and already struggling in league. Calry will struggle. Tour and C/S obviously favourites. Sligobuck21 (Sligo) - Posts: 87 - 23/06/2022 14:07:54 2427056 Link 0 |
Roscommon stepping up the intensity and better fitness, conditioning would be as much the reason than Sligo going down a man. Since then Roscommon lost by one score to Galway and scored 2-16. The current Sligo team would struggle to be competitive against Galway. Lost to Clare by 1 deep into injury. Clare are established Div 2 team a level that Sligo will hope to reach in the years ahead. do you not think all those difference would be even more amplified when you are playing with an extra player? Playing with less players really takes its toll on fitness levels throughout the game. No one said Sligo was going to win, just that the game plan which McEntee had gone with, went out the window when down to 14. They continued with 2 sweepers and then were just pinned back for the remainder of the game. They had relative success in the first 10 minutes being able to counter attack out of defence but that changed with sending off muscles (Sligo) - Posts: 396 - 26/06/2022 11:08:52 2427547 Link 0 |
Ive just seen there is an u19 competition this year. Interesting to see how that goes. Will clubs buy into it as most lads of the best lads at that age will be playing for their clubs senior teams. Sligobuck21 (Sligo) - Posts: 87 - 27/06/2022 14:21:40 2428022 Link 0 |
I know the dust hasn't settled yet on Mayo's loss and Horan's resignation but I would love to see JH involved in Sligo in the near future. The job he done with Mayo raising the standards and establishing them as a top 2/3 footballing county is undervalued. We should fight tooth and nail to bring him in someway, with the recent underage success he might even be interested in the project. Maybe as an advisory or consultant role in the beginning. republican (Sligo) - Posts: 314 - 28/06/2022 14:59:40 2428365 Link 0 |
I get your point and it's valid. However unless a Mgt team approach him and get him on board it won't work. Co Board can't parachute him in and tell Mc Entee you have to work with this guy. At underage level will he really plot the downfall of his own Mayo when they play Sligo in a minor game. If he was manager of Sligo minors he would cos it's his job but as an advisor to them I couldn't see it happen. I would love to see him manage an underage team but remember we won our first U.20 title this year, put up a credible performance in the semi final and the Co Board dispensed with the services of the Mgt so don't hold your breath on an approach to Horan eoinog (Sligo) - Posts: 1309 - 29/06/2022 09:08:58 2428516 Link 0 |
U19 not off to a great start with a club already pulled out and looks like not everyone entered either. Why is there an overlap of timing with u17 as surely clubs will need those last year minors to field at 19 too, would it not have been better to stay at u20 and bring in another few lads in each club. Sligoman1234 (Sligo) - Posts: 243 - 29/06/2022 11:34:57 2428568 Link 0 |
It will be very disappointing if clubs don't embrace the U.19 competition. It's getting played at a great time of the year, students are off for the summer, leaving Cert is done, long evenings, reasonable weather. Any club who doesn't partake is really damaging the progress of their club. Drumcliffe who I felt were probably favourites for the A Championship have withdrawn while Curry pull a stroke by getting into the B competition. This club must have 4 on the Co panel probably more than any other club. eoinog (Sligo) - Posts: 1309 - 29/06/2022 12:11:56 2428578 Link 1 |
You're generally not far off, but you're miles off on this one. A much needed competition, but a ridiculous time of year to run it. Otherwise club schedule has been really good.
