Replying To Barrowsider:  "Yes it's the same at minor. Carlow wexford and wicklow playing each other every year two come out of that and get hammered, would be far better to decouple underage from the provincial system and have a B all ireland where we could play a variety of other weak counties"
More work needs to be done at u13s 14s 15s level

That's not a bad idea. Maybe base it on the previous years u16s as to which counties play in A or B. Every county is going to get a better team along every so often.

That's in place.

There's a 3 tier all Ireland for this year at Minor level.

Plenty of good work being done at underage level. It's simply down to numbers. A panel of 35 young lads in Carlow would realistically only have 21/22 players upto inter county standard. No county ever manages to hold onto 100% so straight away we are down. It's been better in recent years with good structures but has deteriorated at minor level. No S&C really being done at minor / u20. Now lack of support such as buses etc are simple things we as a county cannot afford to be getting wrong.

Good win for our u20 hurlers today. After losing the minor game to Kerry it was very important to get the win today. Hopefully our Seniors can do it tomorrow against Laois. Promotion was the main aim but to win a trophy at home against the old enemy would be the icing on the cake. Best of luck lads

Any win in any championship.match is very welcome

Our fighting spirit was.excellent in both halves and we dominated possession in the second half.and missing their penalty was huge but our short passing in defence.from puck outs needs to be looked at.
A good win -

Quietly impressed with 20s today. Nice balance to the team. I thought they worked the ball very well some lovely moves tru the lines and always getting their heads up. Didn't always work but but the right ideas nonetheless
Probably will be bigger tests ahead. But a great start, for them and for the weekend.

Anyone at this today. Are we taking it easy since securing promotion or were we just not good enough. Let's hope it's the former. It was some hiding.

Awful second half. Dropped heads after laois s two goals. Very poor all over pitch apart from goalkeeper

Hard to know really.
Looked well in it at half time after a slow start.
Then mouse scored a cracking goal to put us in front.
Then laois replied straight away with a goal and we completely stopped hurling. Couldn't win a puck out for the next 20 minutes, and laois really made us pay for that scoring every time they attacked.
Mind you the wind was very strong.
We tried to run in goals after that when at times there was a easy point for the taking (same in the 1st half)
So between that and a bad day from the frees we ended up on the wrong side of 13pts.
Laois are a big physical team and well able to hurl.
I Think they will win the Joe Mac.
As for Carlow, they will need huge improvement.
I have doubt they will.
Loads to be learned from today.
Just hope they have time.

Thanks for that skip. Few lads in the subs today that would make starting 15, paddy boland, ciaran whelan and conor kehoe. Any of them feature?

Not too many positives from yesterday's game. We won very few puckouts. Our defence used the ball superbly and gave excellent ball into our forwards but they simply were not able to win their own ball with any fluency.
One of our key ways in breaking down their defence was when Kehoe and Fitzpatrick ran straight at Laois. This created a few goal scoring chances but we fluffed them all.
Hard to see any positives in the second half. We only scores 1- 3 or 4 and even against the stuff breeze, that was never enough.
We missed frees and went for goals when points were there as well as leaving a few short but our inside forwards found it difficult for the ball to stick due to the tenacity of their defence.
They got a penalty and we got a black card and it looked like we conceded a 2nd penalty for a similar offence but a free was given after a lengthy consultation.
James Doyle was definitely hindered by his hamstring and Jon Nolan was serving a.suspension.
Credit to Laois who upped their performance and fully deserved their victory.

Very disappointing performance yesterday. The wind was strong but carlow never took advantage of it in the first half. Missed a few good goalscoring chances and hit some terrible wides. We seemed to be very loose marking at times. Decision making was poor too.Second half heads completely dropped when laois got a run on them. I wouldn't write this team off after one bad showing. They'll have learned a few things and will bounce back.

Was one of the poorest displays by this team that I have seen. We started with the gale behind us but just didn't take our chances. We hit a heap of wides & definitely left 2 goals behind us. Going in a point down against that wind I knew it was game over. Rowland was almost landing the puck outs into our square with the wind & we struggled to break out. In fairness they played well & took their chances & most importantly looked up for it. We looked very flat. Hard to listen to the Laois crowd roaring every score near the end but they deserved it on the day. However I firmly believe this was just a bad day at the office & would rather have this out of the way before we play Galway as a repeat of this & we will be murdered. The lads have given us great days & I have no doubt we will get back to basics over the next 3 weeks. On a side note I read a few of the Sunday papers & there was not one mention of the div 2 final. They talk about promotion but really only care about the elite 8 or so hurling counties. Even RTE just covered themselves by showing a few minutes of game with no analysis. Compare that to div 3 & 4 football teams who are light years away from competing with the big boys but get their final shown live on the day & then proper highlights & analysis on the Sunday. This is only right but the hurlers should get the same treatment especially as Carlow & Laois will be playing div 1 next year. Jarlath Burns says he is going to really drive the promotion of hurling in every county but I won't hold my breath

That's the sad reality, outside of the top 9 counties, not enough is being done to drive hurling forward.

Carlow, Laois, Westmeath, Antrim and Offaly have been yo-yoing between Div 1 and 2 / Leinster and Joe Mc for years now, with none of them being able to nail down a spot at the top level or consistently compete against the top 9 counties.

Some have been able to put together a couple of years where they can be somewhat competitive against the big 9, but once they lose enough lads to retirement, injury, travel, etc, they slip back because they don't have the depth in the county to play at that standard.

That's the cycle that needs to be broken, but I don't see the GAA going into each of these counties, sitting down with the Co Boards and putting structures/funding in place to develop hurling further.

Under 20s went down badly tonight, not going to criticise the players or management as that isn't helpful, we beat wicklow at minor on 2021 so I looked back at the programme for the day and from the starting team we have only 3 still starting at under 20, wicklow had 6 from that day starting which probably isn't great either but we have a serious issue with player retention. Very hard for a management team to come in and basically have to start from scratch. You will always have players falling away but you would hope to atleast keep a core going from 17s up.

Poor result again showing up our underage structure at County level. Wicklow last year did beat the Carlow u20s in the Andrew Cordon Cup but Carlow were competitive overall. Lost to Laois by 2pts and Longford by 1pt and were well beaten by Meath in the championship. The nucleus of that squad was available this year so very surprised at the results so far. There has been a number of players who decided to concentrate on their leaving cert and college. But yet are lining out for their clubs, so my question is why are they not willing to tog out for county. Management can only work with whats available. I really think the management say of the County minors should follow the same squad to u20s. That way he has a fair idea of whos available and what are the strengths and weakness of players. No point in learning on the job as there is a serious lack of time with these squads. Should be doing a lot better than scoring 7 points and losing by 13 points to Wicklow.

Very depressing underage results all round in football & hurling. Will be no improvements in Senior teams until our underage improves. When our u20 footballers are losing by 13 points to Wicklow you know we are in serious trouble.
