Well done to Carlow hurlers great win. Pound for pound keep punching above themselves.

With promotion achieved is the Kildare game a chance to rest a few players give guys on the fringes a competitive game.

Anybody hopeful about our game vs Longford this weekend? Would be fearing the worst unfortunately as mentioned in the thread our reliance on good players only and lack of tactics and solid decisions from the sideline is starting to catch up on us.

I heard the u20s football team beat the Senior team in a challenge game last week. Would not inspire you for the weekend for the game against Longford.

I heard it directly from a player u20s 1-10 to seniors 1-6, some of the established seniors didnt play. I dont think the young lad be telling tall tales if it didnt happen.

Disappointing end to the league for the footballers. Hard to know what to say or think about it all, on the one hand I don't think we have the players but we also don't do ourselves any favors with how we set up, the style has changed over the 4 years from a very cavalier approach in 2020 to what we have now which is hard to describe as we don't really have any identity in terms of how we play. It almost appears like a whatever works sort of thing and when it doesn't work we are at sea. What's worrying about it all is we don't have much in terms of young talent coming through and that's no disrespect to the players that have been brought in they are good lads but we don't have enough of them and most are coming in having in some cases having never won a game in a carlow Jersey, that scenario is fairly common. For me anyway it's time to focus on minor for a few years and see can we get a couple of competitive teams

Really was a disappointing end to the league but there are good players there and maybe a changed voice could help bring them forward. Unfortunately I do not think there will be much focus on underage be it colts or minor. As one poster advised no buses to games for colts, this was the same for minor panels with a lot more cutbacks on that level of intercounty, from what i hear that panel has been shipping some heavy losses and while lack of support would not be the primary issue there it really cannot help the team and management as a whole and this sounds like something that will not be a one year issue going on money concerns. Underage is an easy target for cuts with charters only included for senior panels

Yes I heard the cuts were made to minor panels as well, not good at all, it makes you question the long term vision for gaa in the county, for me anyway whatever has to suffer the last thing we should target is underage, if we don't treat them well how can we expect lads to commit longer term to 20s and senior.

I hope it's not true barrowsider. It's hard to believe that any serious administrator would even countenance such a regressive move. Bizarre.

Back to the good old days of basics not being right for county teams. Remember the u21 hurlers beat Dublin in Parnell park 2013? Had to warm up in their club gear, given a t-shirt with no crest after the match just because they got to the Leinster semi final!!! Then we wonder why we never progress

It's 100% true sadly. We are not in a good place. Cynical stuff in my opinion. I know I wouldn't have my name attached to such actions.

How much money would we save by switching to volunteer only management of our county teams?

And that cash could then be instead invested in our underage rather than being taken out of the county by journeymen.

Under current management we are mid table division four in football. How much worse could it be under an enthusiastic local?

Might even be a lot better if we stumbled on the right person.

As for hurlers, yes, current manager has a done a good job. But there's a ceiling there.

It's just a thought. Some of the top counties only hire unpaid locals.

We are poor. Maybe we need to be realistic?

What local do you suggest? Outside of Joe Murphy there's no one with the credentials and can't see him taking the job. Not saying it's a bad idea but there are not many candidates

Well some thing's gotta give. We can't keep doling out money and absolutely not visible improvement. I mean, what's the point, as someone already said we are glued to div4 for the last 5 years. Huge costs have been incurred during this time and none of this has benefitted carlow at all. Better surely to have a genuine local person do the job and the savings ploughed into underage etc. No brainer. The hurlers have had more success but as poster says it's lot lower bar and underage hurling has been very poor for last number of years. Maybe the same reasoning applies here too.

Well I don't think accepting mediocrity is a good idea either. If you put a local in charge who isn't up to it players won't commit and we'll go from mid table to being the worst team in the country. People don't want to play for carlow, look at Wicklow with Oisín McConville I know they're going poorly this year but if Carlow got someone with a name like that in at least you would attract all the players to come in. I agree the money has to go into underage too but if young people see there senior being hammered every week they won't stick with football they'll go to other sports or just won't bother at all. To be fair to the hurlers they do make it somewhat more appealing to play for them

Why does the candidate need to be high profile?

What sort of credentials did Sean Boylan have when he took over Meath, back in the day?

That's another issue. How much money have Carlow clubs wasted on outside managers in this century?

In that time frame, they have won one Leinster. Coached by a manager who refused to accept any payment.

The only other team to reach a final were managed by their own clubman.

Maybe it's time they started giving locals a chance too? To let them develop their skills?

The manager is very important to GAA teams. Especially when it's a special manager. But what's the point in paying journeymen to take over teams, just to tick a box?

Given we are at the bottom of the pile, we need to be radical. And what I am suggesting is radical.

Exactly. In the last three years, we have spent hundreds of thousands of euros that we could have invested in underage. And it has led to the following in the league

Played 20

Won 6

Drawn 4

Lost 12

That's a 30% win rate,

Could a hungry passionate volunteer coaching team do any worse?

Sounds about right. Can remember helping with a fundraiser few years ago county board ordered food for half of us girl serving was apologising for how little she could give us., whilst they had 3 course meal downstairs in hotel. Wonder if there perks are cut back also.
