Replying To AudiMan:  "Hi TheRock2121: It's not that long ago you were saying we basically had no defenders. What has suddenly changed?"
Yes I did say I worried about our defenders when it came to actually defending. My point here is our lads at the back can definitely attack. The addition of Moore has given me hope and I think alongside Mc Cole and Mc Colgan we have a very good full back line in the making in terms of defence also.

Mogan Moore and Mc Colgan all played in the full back line this year. Ban has been used in the full back line most of his career. Daire and Shane are middle 8 players who have the ability to play in the half back line.
The days of having out and out defenders is gone. That's dinasour thinking. Even mc cole showed this year more of an attacking sense, hitting points from play.

for those of us who think like Dinosaurs.. are wrong to say that defenders still need to be able to mark their direct opponent and limit the amount of scores he gets? . We have nobody fit and available who can do that. Not much point having a full back scoring a point or 2 from play if he allows the opposition full forward score 10 points because he's not able to mark him. The best teams still have good man markers, unfortunately we don't and that's a big problem.

Replying To Al_Maguire:  "I'm just clarifying that he wasn't 'just doing his job blindly and innocently under someone elses direction.' He acted in a way that he knew would upset Jim.

You can write books and do your job without acting in a sneaky clandestine way."
From reading the book, he didn't give away any big secrets. I think Cassidy was sacrificed, collateral damage, a way of McGuinness stamping his authority on the squad. He had plenty good options in the half back line to replace him. I wonder if it was the goalkeeper or the full forward would he have been as quick to kick them out

I agree. Of course defending is important and I also raised my concern at our ability in terms of one on one scenarios. I think with a fit mc Colgan and Moore alongside Mc Cole we won't be far away.

Mc Colgan has never been tested really at county level. Forget about league . Saturday is the day when men become men. Derry have dangerous forwards who will go for goal at every opportunity. We're stepping up a few gears playing Derry forget about the league. But I'm still confident that we will beat them. I heard too mc kinless was out but you never know.

I thought Moore and McColgan did some great defending in croke Park against Armagh, and they both were lively going forward too. They are the examples of modern day Corner backs. You need to be contributing in defence and attack. I think Curran can be used in certain situations for man marking but for me Moore, McCole and McColgan is our strongest full back line as another poster has just said

I think with recent tactical advancements in the game maybe we should play 15 goalkeepers against Derry. Like that would certainly mean we wouldn't concede any goals!

26 named and no Ban or McColgan. Two good and pacey defenders to be down.

Ban a huge loss poor lad so unlucky with injuries. Can't see that team starting. Mc Cole and mc gee will probably get the nod , at whose expense probably odhran Doherty and Aaron Doherty. Forecast good for Celtic park really looking forward to it. Can't beat c ship football . Patton could be the match winner tomorrow come on Donegal

Replying To High_and_wide:  "Lots of talk of Jim having something up his sleeve. What sort of thing?

I think the things that could be got after is a clever use of the attacking mark, creating mismatches on the edge of the square with the likes of Langan and McGee drifting inside, and a kickout strategy that goes long and catches Odhran Lynch off his line. What else?"
Most people seem to hate the mark but I'm not sure why more teams don't focus on it more. Donegal did well on it last year against Derry for example. I see very little indication Donegal will focus on it tomorrow. The few times they have tried it in the league the kick in to Gallen has had far too much hang time and the defender has been breaking the ball pretty easily. I suppose Niall O'Donnell could help with the mark option as he's a good kick passer.

I've heard a few people mentioning trying to go after lynch and that would seem a reasonable bet. Try to encourage him up the field and then blitz him to turm the ball over. A keeper is so important that if you can unsettle them it can bring huge dividends. Lynch could be up it though and it doesn't bear fruit.

With the injuries and it being so difficult to get players all match fit and training together, it's hard to see how they can match a Derry team that are close to full hand to play from.

Though I'm still very excited and best of luck to team and management tomorrow.

Should be a cracker tomorrow. Surprised it didn't sellout first time but with the predicted good weather hopefully we get a great game with the right result!

I think the panel can still be different on the day compared to what was named is that right?

I would agree, Mc Gee & Mc Cole will start. To have any chance our forward line will have to be on their game scoring a high percentage of chances.

yeah , the 26 can still change..... Teams will be allowed to name four standby footballers (or hurlers) and they can be introduced in the event that players listed on the original 26 are unable to feature on a number of permitted grounds including a confirmed injury or Covid-19 diagnosis.

Listening to various commentators this week and they all say one thing the same, McGuinness will spring something new for this game. I hope they're right as I fear if we set up the same way we did in Croke Park in league final we'll get well beaten. I just hope we were holding something back for Derry.

Good luck to everyone travelling over. Make plenty of noise! Up Donegal.

Ok well I'm crossing my fingers for Caolan mcColgan , he's a great asset. Strange that he's not named as he was so good in the league final, I hope he didn't pick up an injury in training.

Who knows, we might even see Eoghan Ban or conor odonnel sneak into the squad at the last minute. Here's hoping.

Today's the day, looking forward to it big time. Come on Donegal

A relative lives in Donegal. He says the training and preparation they've been doing has been massively intense for months and they've been targeting the Derry game for a while. They've blown the National League Champions totally out of the water. Brilliant performance.

One of our best championship performances in years, McGee, McCole, McHugh, Patton/Mulreany and O'Baoill among others immense.

Fair play to Donegal for a thoroughly deserved victory. Derry will have a lot of introspection to do following that shocker of a performance but Donegal were absolutely superb. The goals were the killer and it looked to me something that was worked on massively, once the ball broke in midfield with Lynch stranded the sheer determination of the Donegal players to stream towards goal was striking. The decision to put Jason McGee on Conor Glass at kick outs was a masterstroke. Him and Rogers really struggled and it's not often that happens.

Best of luck in the rest of the Ulster Championship.
