There is no benefit to reaching the connacht final. Zero.

A blind man could tell you that but we have Leitrim12 telling us it will be great because we'll beat New York & Sligo on the way. Hilarious stuff.

Ok so Leitrim's goal for 2023 is to get promoted from division 4, then lose to either New York or Sligo/London in Connacht championship to avoid Connacht final to get a run in the Tailteann cup. Happy.

Correct, not this year anyways.Itd be like getting promoted from Div 4 straight to Div 1.Getting out of Div 4 beating NY well and a good ding dong game against Sligo and then into the Tailtean cup for a run to the final would be progress. Its all about progress.Shipping multiple beatings in the Championship against much better teams would not be progress imo.

This is a pointless argument that has been going on here but no team is going to purposely go out to lose any game.
New York have more resources and with the huge upturn in Emigration and the fact New York believe they can beat Leitrim every time we meet means that they are likely to have a very strong panel from all counties and as we seen last year we on equal footing with Sligo so that game could go either way if we get that far.

Anyway, The league comes first.

What I do know is that in Leitrim we now have by far the best midfielder in Division Four in Pearce Dolan and arguably 2 of the best scoring forwards in Keith Beirne and Ryan O'Rourke. If Mark Plunkett, Darragh Rooney and Jordan Reynolds can reach the levels they are capable of we arguably have the best forward unit in Division Four and as good as any in Division 3. This is a new phenomenon in Leitrim as scoring forwards has always been are Achilles heel and defence are strong point - See the Des Dolan era.

It's further back the field that we have troubles. Tom Quinn may solve a lot of these issues if he can get into good enough shape without a proper preseason behind him to fill the number three position and that will mean Donal Casey can move out to number 6. This will give us a better spine than we have had in years. Then you are hoping Paddy Maguire can keep defying his age and that Mark Diffley can step up another level.
Personally I would play Cillian McGloin as a partner to Dolan in Midfield but I think Moran will play him at 7. That leaves one wing back position up for grabs. Which I think Aidan Flynn will take.

I'll be interested to see the panel/team for the first league game but here is my guess. Could be forgetting one or two guys.

Killian Gaffey

Mark Diffley Tom Quinn Paddy Maguire

Cillian McGloin Donal Casey Aidan Flynn

Pearce Dolan
Donal Wrynn

Mark Plunkett Keith Beirne Jordan Reynolds

Darragh Rooney Ryan O'Rourke Shane Moran

SUBS:

Darren Maxwell

C. Reynolds
Fergal McTague
Shane Quinn
James Rooney
Conor Farrell

Paul Keaney
Domhnail Flynn

Tom Prior
Jack Heslin
Evan Sweeney
Riordan O'Rourke

I don't think Shane Moran is involved

However I agree we have talent

Tom Quinn is more suited to half back or marking key players

Goal 1 is promotion from division 4.

Goal 2 regardless if you me or mickey mouse agrees on it would be Connacht Final. Leitrim are entered into Connacht Championship/All Ireland series if we like it or not. The Connacht championship is broken and should be seeded but it is not. So unless we are suggesting leitrim throws a game, which I highly doubt we would, The second goal would be Connacht Final. I don't agree on it as we would be hammered come the final and thereafter but it is what it is. Until the GAA introduced seeding.

And obviously Goal 3 when Goal 2 doesn't work out (before the Final) would be a run in the Tailteann Cup..

Team I would put our first round of the league if all is fit.

1. Maxwell
2. M Diffley
3. Donal Casey
4. P Maguire
5. Cillian McGlion
6. Mark Plunett
7. Jack heslin
8. D. Wrynn
9. P Dolan
10. P Keaney
11. K Beirne
12. Jordan Renoylds
13. Ryan O Rourke
14. Riordan O Rourke
15. Shane Quinn (Sweeper to give cover to an attacking half back line)

Attaching Options off the bench
1. Darragh Rooney
2. C Farrell
3. Tom Prior
4. Evan Sweeney
5. Donhaill flynn

Defensive options
1. C. Renoylds
2. J Rooney
3. C Farrell
4. A Flynn
5. F McTeigh

I wouldn't make a call on Tom Quinn never seen him play football I have no doubt playing senior club football in Dublin he is well equipped to play on this team however until I see him playing I would be naming him on a team. Also Gaffney in goals I have never seen him play so I'd go with Maxwell who has the experience of last year.

I think we have an exciting squad this year. Really looking forward to the league starting in a couple
Of weeks

Have flights booked for the London league game. First time going to Ruslip. Where is good accommodation close by the ground. Something like a premier INN would do the finest. Thanks in advance

Leitrim haven't reached a Connacht final sense 2000? Nothing something you turn your nose at if lucky enough to reach it this year and the added bonus of playing in the group format whereby should produce big crowds regardless of the results. Tailteann should only be talked about if Leitrim are part of it.

I get that we likely will not make out out of the group stages or whatever the Sam Maguire early rounds look like, but how many other teams will not?
Will they say "ah sure we will throw our games and drop down to win a handy championship that most counties do not care about?"
not likely.
regardless how our championship goes we will likely be in tailteann cup next year bar some sort of miracle, in the meantime work with what is in front of us which is the league, worry about who we play in championship after.

Finally someone understands Haha. Unless leitrim are planning to throw a game in the Connacht championship then we cannot pass over the possibility that we might end up in the Connacht Final. We can only look at the Tailteann cup when we are actually apart of it.

I'm also heading but staying in Central London as it's easier to get to Gatwick from there. Doesn't look to be much exciting up at Ruislip. I think if I was staying round there I'd be going somewhere like Uxbridge as Heathrow is close by. Am staying in Manhattan for similar reasons in April... not much around Yonkers and I'm not on for self catering this time round.

Correct on London, there is a nice and moderately priced Ramada around the corner from McGovern park which is dead handy for getting to the game but as this is a league game, there will not be much support from either camp and probably not much craic around McGovern Park after, so better off staying in city center.
On NY, I've not been to Gaelic park so do not know the craic, but would there not be things on in Yonkers/Mclean Ave Irish bars direction the Friday/Saturday night at least? I will be staying in Manhattan initially but had planned on a night or two in Woodlawn to be in close proximity to our generous sponsors.

I have completed the New York trip a few times. I'd say do the Friday and Saturday in Yonkers but before/after that the city Is the place to be

Replying To Square_B:  "Reaching a Connacht final and loosing means we're in the All Ireland proper... and likely 3 further beatings await us. Not in the long term interest of the team. The Tailteann Cup is our level at the moment and will be for the foreseeable. Not saying we shouldn't get a crack at Connacht but reality is we're nowhere near good enough to play in a final."
I can see where you are coming from and its hard to argue with your prediction of the outcome of 3 AI round robin games. However, what about the mantra we regularly hear, "you have to be playing the top teams in order to progress." Surely 4 full tilt championship games against against Div 1 and 2 teams will greatly benefit the losing side in this years connacht final for the 2024 NFL and Tailtain Cup.

Sorry I meant not much in the way of decent accommodation... the last time I spent 5 days up in Woodlawn with trips in and out of Manhattan... it was probably too much. I'll definitely be on McLean Ave after the game!

4 20+ point defeats would not do us any good if that happened

So the vibe I'm getting is that come championship time you want to beat New York, lose narrowly to Sligo and have a good run in the Tailteann Cup.. Just suppose that you get beaten in the first round of the Tailteann Cup, what will your response be. ? I expect Leitrim will go and try and win every game in front of them and if that's getting to a Connacht final, losing it plus a few more games then so be it. Andy Moran will relish the challenge
