Well done, Strokestown! Great champions. The Mayo lads weren't up to them at all. It'd be great to see them go all the way now.

Congrats to Strokestown Connacht Intermediate champions in some style in MacHale Park. The 9 point winning margin full value for it.

Shane McGinley, Stephen Tigue, Colin Compton, Timmy Gibbons, Colin Neary, Mickey Kavanagh among the stand out players on show

Another heavy loss for your Mayo reps this time on their home patch against Roscommon opposition today.

Next Mayo v Roscommon game in the senior intercounty championship will be in Machale park and Clare am I right in saying that Roscommon won their last two championship matches against Mayo in Machale park?

Don't know when we last bet Meeyo or Galway in the SFC in the Hyde?

Yer a force.
Definitely top 8 it's something we aspire to.
But by god
Since COVID its like ye have jumped off a cliff ye are not in the reckoning for sfa same as ourselves
Connacht is as low now as early 90s aiming for league victories and non runners for Sam.

No early 90s team in Connacht reached 2 All-Ireland finals in 4 years nor did the province have 3 teams playing in Div 1 with a 4th team with the potential to rise up the divisions.

Connacht was in lower level when Mayo won five in row 2011 to 2015. Roscommon then was struggling to get out of Division 3 and Galway who would remain a Div 2 team until 2018.

Some win for them. It would be great now if they could make the All Ireland.

One question from a selfish county perspective, is the progress of clubs deep into the AI series a negative for the county team?

Just thinking off the top of my head in recent years, the Glen lads possibly running out of gas for Derry. Ben O'Carroll that same year never fully recovered from his club injury and Eddie Nolan stepped away from the panel. Shane Walsh jaded for Galway the year Kilmacud won. The Canavans took a while to get going last year for Tyrone.

If Brigids win this Sunday it could well be a hindrance for Roscommon. Mark Dowd will have no choice but to give Brigids,Strokestown players a few weeks off after their long club season concludes however round 2 we play Monaghan in a potential four pointer and we'll need our strongest team available for that game.

Had we won just one of our opening two Division 1 games in 2024 we would have stayed up. Injuries and Brigids players involved in All-Ireland final before the Tyrone (A) Galway (H) games certainly didn't help our cause.

Any word on lads called in to have a look at ahead of next year? Heard there was 7 from Glaveys which is hard to believe.

Was talking to a prominent Glaveys member at the weekend he said 4 of their players are currently training with the county senior panel. Cathal Heneghan,Dylan Ruane and two new additions who are both finished with the U20s Rob Heneghan,Daniel Hagney. Niall Heneghan who has another year with the U20s is apparently part of the development panel.

On the topic of U20s . The Division 2 final was a good contest between Oran/Croans and Kilbride that was in the balance until a goal in added time. Handful of players in action that will be on Cian Smiths U20s panel next year showed well, unfortunately another two was watching on from the sidelines unable to play due to injury hopefully the same injuries don't rule them out next spring.

Surely 3 yeah, Ruane and Hagney are two more. Seems excessive when lads from lesser clubs / without fellow club men involved get overlooked.

Well I hope Dowd from Creggs isn't overlooked again. He was arguably the second best forward of the intermediate championship

Without naming names, a few lads up there are not up to div 1 standard and are not there on merit either, lads who performed well in the club championship and I don't mean just the senior one should all be at least looked at for a few weeks up there. Dowd from Creggs is one, Henry from Michael's, Glennon from Boyle had a good year or two and corner back is a position we are light in and isn't there, to name a few.

Nobody as far as I know. As with every year plenty when asked In have declined given the serious commitment required to be part of senior county panel nowadays.

I should note one of the Intermediate players named above was part of the Roscommon panel a few years ago and opted out after the FBD league when he realised he hadn't the free time for the heavy training schedule.

Some occupations would rule out being an Inter Co panellist as would working a long way from home or indeed studying certain 3rd level subjects.

With a homegrown man at least we haven't to wait for months till an outside manager would get to know players and the football scene in the County.

I know of lads that have been asked in the past but weren't willing to or just couldn't give the serious committment that is required.
