Fair play to Mattie. I hope he drives on now and smashes the record. He got 2 v New York and for anyone who was there, he was getting a fair lot of 'treatment' from the NY defenders off the ball and he got really riled up for a while by it, there was nothing soft in his 2 goals there. Then one each v Rossies and v Mayo and 2 truly vital goals v Derry. When we absolutely, definitely need clutch majors, Mattie is showing that he's the man to hit the onion bag!
As much as he's delivering, I think there's even more in him. He has the height, power, fielding ability, a baller with it, pace, a great footballing brain to be in the right place at the right time. Hard to see where the ceiling is for this lad when he's on it. Massive ability and he needs to stay constantly involved and seeking ball. He still has a tendency to drift out of the game a little at times. He has a few work ons like this (2 pointer frees for one!!) but then everyone has. This is a guy that is of FOTY quality if he drives on. Give him the chance to play and be on the end of fast direct ball. Great work so far and hopefully some blistering performances to come from him yet. We're alive and now we need to show we're angry and we're seriously dangerous! If we can bring a massive performance in Breffni, the whole job opens up again for us." Matthew Tierney Galway's most underrated player by his own and indeed in the national media.
On the venue the powers to be have fixed Galway v Armagh in a Ulster venue because Armagh moaned so much that the last two Connacht meeting was played in a Connacht venue. Mad thing about this group format is Galway can now reach the knock out stage with 1 point from three games.

That's his missing ingredient, because he really ticks every other box. Still, with all his talent, he finds a way to not be particularly prolific at point scoring in the modern intercounty game, so that's the bit he needs to improve on imo.

Calling this Galway team soft is nothing short of laughable. Anyone who was at the game saw it firsthand - when we went 8 points down, the wind swirled, and the rain started to lash, it felt like a defining moment. Sink or swim. And this group swam. They dug in, fought back, and took control of the game. That says everything you need to know about their mentality. Sure, there were some poor wides and decisions, but they never threw in the towel and that is a major positive.

Any loss is not down to effort or attitude. We have some of the same issues as last year, finishing is not where it needs to be(especially some goal chances) but that can be worked on. A bit more composure in the stretch giving up a late point to Dublin and Derry, again can be worked on. Id like to see Conroy as a finisher, he is one of our best players but I think we need him most in the final twenty

That said until this Galway team cross the line that sort of garbage will be levelled at you time and time again. Mentality, fight, never say die are all traits I admire greatly but that won't satisfy the mob. Don't we know all about it.
