Seriously, why can't we be benevolent like Mayo supporters on their blog?.. seems to work for them, as they have our number in recent times.

Presume Sligo at home for the match in 2 weeks as ye got the bye in Salthill the last time we were due to meet at this stage.

Last year's Connacht Final was a 'home' game for Sligo, I believe.

Nearly sure the home "neutral" advantage for the Connacht final is kept seperate to the rest of the Connacht matches so think Sligo have this game at home but should be confirmed during the week. Be a good test for Sligo to see how much improvement since last meeting. Galway looked impressive against london even though London looked like poorest London team in years.

The Mayo supporters benevolence on an online forum has helped the Mayo players get the upper hand on Galway in recent times?
If only Joyce and co knew it was that easy.

PJ said that the injured lads are back doing some running and we might see some of them on bench against Sligo. Very encouraging to hear that. Obviously "some running* can mean many things but it did sound positive. Certainly it's the most positive comment regarding the injuries I've heard from him.

I can see your point, you would be very disappointed if you lined up a challenge match and they were that weak but but it was not an optional game being the first round and in that regard you take the positives that you can such as game time for previously injured lads, some lads showing up well etc. It was a pretty professional performance in the context of everything. Hopefully a few more will make it back for at least the bench(Comer looked pretty fit to me) and we look forward to Sligo who will be a much bigger tougher challenge

I hope it's in Sligo as it should provide a much better contest, but is it not a bit ridiculous that Sligo pull out of a competition in 2020 and Galway get punished by losing a home game?

The last game played between the sides under the home/away arrangement was Markievicz Park in 2019

There are players who have come back from cruciate's quicker than some of these Galway lads are coming back from injury and another two lads injured on Saturday. Id say Cunningham is injured also otherwise would have come on as we played with 14 at the end. Sligo may not be as easy as we think, they weren't far off getting promoted to Div 2.

Definitely agree Sligo be no pushover Galway would definitely need some of injured players on panel I presume Cunningham must be carrying some type injury ,, I don't think Joyce has being very fair on him at all taken off v Kerry no ball at all goung in easy option take off the corner forward , anyone know when last time Damien comer started and finished game for galway ,, it must be close to year ago I'd say but I don't know ,,

Its an interesting one re fixture. I think it should be in Sligo. Logic being that even though Sligo did not field during the Covid debacle , Galway did receive the walkover. Gate receipts at Connacht games do not go to the home team so no financial loss to Galway. So what more could Galway have gotten out of the fixture had it been played only to progress to next round. If Sligo had thought for a second that the this would mean that they didnt get home game next time round then the would surely have rounded up 15 men to take the field and despite the fact that game would have been trivial and probably extremely one sided.
Thats my view. I do see the other side of the argument to an extent but its a 50 /50 decision at worst, and 50/50 decisions should go in favour of the teams with less resources.
Now on the flip side , should Galway and Mayo both progress to Connacht final ( neither are certainties) , I would expect that to be on in Salthill, on the basis that Galway earned the right to the home fixture in the prelim QF last year on the basis of finishing 2nd rather than 3rd in the group so the Connacht championship rota should prevail.

Going by the league this year and many championship games over the last number of years, Galway generally play better away from home so I don't think "home advantage" counts when it comes to Galway football at least!

Yeah pretty fair summary. Be shocked if it isn't in Sligo. Not sure what the delay with Gaa announcing the venue. Usually a sign they are to up to something lol. Hopefully not another Newbridge or nowhere scandal this early in the season.

Should have been no home and away games at all during covid. All of those games should have been played in the Connacht GAA centre instead. The town of Roscommon and it's businesses missed out when we played Mayo behind closed doors and only 1000 was allowed to attend the match with Galway.

its was also wrong by not allowing Sligo time to play that fixture yet a few weeks later pushed the AI semi final back so Tyrone could field against Kerry.

I can see that point of view but my impression was that Sligo pulled out of the competition in 2020 rather than pulled out of a match. Semantics perhaps but important context for this decision. Funnily enough, Sligo pulling out of that game probably screwed Galway twice, as they went into the Connacht final against Mayo completely cold, played like they had just met each other for the first half hour and still only lost by a point. Given that Tipp were waiting in the semi it might just have cost Galway an AI final spot (that they'd have realistically lost regardless)

I definitely think longterm its better for Galway to play this years game in Sligo. Do you want to be meeting Sligo up there now when you're going to win handily in all likelihood or in 2 or 3 years time when all those good underage players have come through and they'll be a much better side. If Sligo county board had a bit of foresight they'd keep that in mind, for all that it won't mean much to McEntee who won't be there longterm

All 5 subs had been used when Tomo Culhane off with a knock so Cunningham couldn't have been used or indeed any sub.

I get your point Analyser but you are mixing up the years , the Sligo v Galway fixture we are referring to was in 2020 and the Tyrone v Kerry fixture was in 2021, if I remember correctly Sligo had a huge injury list combined with the Covid pandemic.
