I see the GAA have pushed inter county training to the start of Feb at the earliest. In the current climate it is the right decision but inevitably this is likely to push the national league to at least the end of March. sam1884 (UK) - Posts: 999 - 05/01/2021 12:40:58 2326098 Link 1 |
When is the draw taken place for this years football and hurling championships does anyone have an idea? Irishcelt (Wicklow) - Posts: 149 - 05/01/2021 16:05:53 2326127 Link 1 |

I'd be surprised if they either of them lose. I'd be almost certain that the dubs will win. As for limerick, they might be caught by galway or tipp but I won't be betting against them. Galway9801 (Galway) - Posts: 1667 - 05/01/2021 23:40:37 2326225 Link 1 |
The GAA will try and push out the county now and squeeze the club In reality they should use this season to try something different Scrap the leagues for this year and have open draw championships - tier 1 and 2 Tier 1 - div 1, 2 and 3 - avoids all crying over who lost a chance to qualify through league Tier 2 - div 4 Tier 1 - 8 groups of 3 - all play each other once at neutral venues (Dublin also) Tier 2 - 2 groups of 4 Tier 1 groups produce last 16 - bottom 8 enter tier 2 playoff Tier 2 quarterfinals consist of top 2 in each tier 4 group and 4 winners of tier 1 relegation playoffs All knock out from there on Only 6 weekends needed to win all Ireland and tail team cup tirawleybaron (Mayo) - Posts: 1091 - 17/01/2021 09:23:51 2327784 Link 0 |
Anyone can catch anyone on a given day. Agree I think Limerick are favourites for it and rightly so and tbh I would be happy enough to see them win a few more but as you say Galway with their underage conveyor belt are most likely of the other counties to beat them on a day. Hard to know where Tipp will be- same as every year since I started following hurling in 89. Could be brilliant or the same panel could be ordinary. I think Waterford will be a little better. Cork will be better. Clare will be alot better. Even Wexford should be better than they were last year when their tackle rate was only nearly 50% of what it was in 2019. Kilkenny will bring the usual intensity and caught Limerick in 2019. Limerick will have to be at least as good as they were last year and that will be hard to achieve as they were outstanding and everything went right with injuries and no covid cases. As regards the Dubs they haven't had great underage success for a good few years now and alot of the golden generation are coming to the end of their amazing careers. They are obviously favourites but I think not by as much as any of the previous 6 years. Viking66 (Wexford) - Posts: 11479 - 17/01/2021 10:34:27 2327789 Link 1 |
Geographically arranged groups on account of covid? Y would you have to do away with the league as your championship only uses 6 weekends?

As I see it, we are unlikely to have national leagues and so we will have a truncated championship leaving the club to again be the main focus of GAA for 21. carlowman (Carlow) - Posts: 1812 - 17/01/2021 20:17:04 2327853 Link 1 |
You could have a decent (fair) all Ireland in 6 weeks - see above Club football could be played in most counties in 6 weeks also (no leagues) as long as they stop at semis Clubs cannot be trusted with celebrations after club finals tirawleybaron (Mayo) - Posts: 1091 - 21/01/2021 22:27:24 2328408 Link 0 |

Don't play then, other teams will. Blame Dublin for everything.

Did Cavan turn up to play Dublin in Semifinal? I say turn up, field a team. So other teams should quit now?

So if the Leagues don't start till March, should the club championships be played in summer and the AI championships played in Autumn/Winter with the chance that there may be supporters allowed in as has been mentioned in some quarters and provide the GAA with much needed revenue. There might not be a grant this year and the GAA might have to borrow money to run the championships. With no Super 8's this year, and just assuming all SFC Provincial Champions in 2021 make it to the AI Semi Finals, am I correct in suggesting that the draw follows on from older years rotation, so would it be a :- Fionn (Dublin) - Posts: 3684 - 22/01/2021 23:03:29 2328620 Link 1 |
You would hope that by September/October that club celebrations won't matter in the grand scheme of things but that latest delay in vaccinations is worrying. Add that that the inadequacy of this government. The borders should be sealed shut including the one with Northern Ireland as much as that will upset people. We did it for foot and mouth and it needs to be done now. This is serious. Australia is almost back to normal due to very strict border policy and curfews on the streets. Army backed up local police and took no sh1t. Friend of mine in Melbourne is enjoying a pint out with the lads as I type this. yew_tree (Mayo) - Posts: 11219 - 23/01/2021 10:29:19 2328629 Link 4 |
There's been no club championship matches in 4 months, I must check the Covid numbers, they must be really low now.

inter county Championship should be played mid Aug to end Oct. At that point fair chance that in person attendance might be possible. Surely this makes sense all round for the competition and financially. centerfield (Mayo) - Posts: 360 - 23/01/2021 11:54:39 2328636 Link 0 |
Why close a border within Ireland? Cases are fractionally worse in the South and have been for a while. Yes close All airports and ports except for cargo but not within Ireland.

By my calculations the semi s would be Leinster v Connaught and Munster v Ulster.
