would it not make sense for the inter county season in 21 to be pushed out so that if the vaccine works and get rolled out in significant amounts by mid year, there may be attendance at inter county matches centerfield (Mayo) - Posts: 360 - 21/12/2020 17:08:25 2325146 Link 1 |
I thought the inter county would be the 2nd half of year due to possibility of vaccine..I'm surprised by this move..is it going to make it difficult for clubs to keep players at home now?travel could be huge the 2nd half of 2021.. I thought that as well. This scheduling makes an empty Croke Park likely for next year's All Ireland Finals again.Surely go to the September of old for the Finals and see where things are at then.

I think they are thinking that the virus will be easier controlled just having county teams playing early on with no fans same as this year, it's harder to control crowds at club games I suppose. Tirchonaill1 (Donegal) - Posts: 2705 - 21/12/2020 19:59:12 2325219 Link 1 |
Ya can't play club games in level 5 but you can play inter County. It looks like we will be in level 5 for a while after Xmas so makes a little sense to play County first tom84 (Cavan) - Posts: 334 - 21/12/2020 20:33:26 2325229 Link 0 |
The way things are gone there won't be many at them anyway. Be more entertainment on the back end of a knitting machine. It's a one team competition now.

Don't think travel is returning to the same levels in 2021. J1s won't be permitted next year as it will be too late and Australia ain't letting anyone in until 2022.

Run the football off over two weekends in may, semi final between Mayo and Kerry and Dublin with a bye to the final which they will win. Let the other counties carry on with club competitions. republicofcloone (Leitrim) - Posts: 375 - 21/12/2020 21:04:17 2325249 Link 2 |
Super idea. Why would you bother bringing mayo or Kerry up though for a semi and the winners go into the annual turkey shoot?! Be silly. Let them toss and if they want to play the game organise a ref from Dublin or any neighbouring county to stick with tradition.

It's a decision that suggests Croke Park have prioritised club players over money. If they had gone the other way you can be sure there would have been much more talk about it on here. Be interesting to see how it works out, hopefully it goes well and is the longterm solution.

I agree. I think the Council have made a good decision which should mean the club championships can take place at all. Tbh I'm happy and a little surprised that they haven't prioritised money as they seem to do lately! If it means we have to watch our county teams on tv or online for another year so be it.

That's it realistically if club went 1st no activity of any sort would happen til March or April maybe later, hopefully the vaccine can be rolled out safely and efficiently.

Yeh leave the Clubs to the finer weather too. Intercounty football is now irrelevant to most fans so it's good to have a long summer / Autumn to look forward too. daytona11 (Kildare) - Posts: 4012 - 23/12/2020 12:05:41 2325631 Link 0 |
Surely IC league, then club followed by IC championship Aug-Oct would make more sense

Spot on. Less games at intercounty and makes the most sense in terms of controlling it. It also is always a nightmare to finish out club championships at the time given. Most posters here are only interested in intercounty tbough which is very obvious tiobraid (Tipperary) - Posts: 4119 - 23/12/2020 16:13:01 2325688 Link 0 |
Its very possible there wont be any non elite sport possible in March and April. Likely even. May and June could still be uncertain too. I think the GAA have done their best for the clubs which is a decision I'd whole heartedly back.

2020 and 2021 has worked out well for the club game. I wouldn't get carried away with the GAA's priority though; it looks increasingly likely we're heading for an extended Level 5 period, maybe into April or May whilst they roll out the vaccine. There is little point wasting four or five months; clubs won't be allowed to play in level 5 - inter county as elite will be. So there wasn't really a decision to make; the GAA will ask for government funding to run it's elite competition and hope by June/July when we get to the latter stages some percentage of crowds will be allowed when we move down the levels; at that time clubs will also be allowed to play. As elite we can play inter county from Feb onwards so that was the only option available to the decision makers; if they were allowed I'm convinced they'd have preferred the club to go first but that option wasn't on the table. sam1884 (UK) - Posts: 999 - 23/12/2020 18:01:47 2325713 Link 0 |
Don't know why they even bother with inter county at all. It's irrelevant now. Suppose they have to fulfil contracts with sky and rde (raidio Dublin Éireann). Apart from that there's no point coz Dublin will win football and limerick hurling. Rest of us will fight it out to see who can get within ten points of Dublin.

Did you not enjoy the football this year like most Cavan people. First Ulster title in 23 years.

Club provincial and all Ireland series is taking place this year though. I think it's great that come August club games could be back to normal attendances....anyone have a fast forward button?
