Four Teams Representing Dublin Geographic Area!

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Dublin city.....population 554k, Co Town Dublin

Dun Laoghaire- Rathdown...pop. 218k Co Town Dun Laoghaire

Fingal......population...….. 296k Co Town Swords

South Dublin...…...population...278k Co Town Tallaght

The above is the official designation given to the four administrative regions in Dublin together with their Co Towns, each has their own coat of arms also.

Is it too much to ask that each of the four field a team to compete against counties of similar and indeed much less populations?

For those that know can you say what and how many GAA Clubs are in each region?

Meanwhile - Over in Connacht

Mayo Population = 130,507
Galway Population = 258,058

Leitrim Population = 32,044

Are we going to split Galway and Mayo? Surely they have an advantage over Leitrim. And this is just one of many similar examples in the Country where Population is not even..!

This is a solid proposal.

There is already a massive cultural divide in Dublin between north and south, public and private school, blue collar and white collar. So why not create new teams that reflect the reality on the ground?

Let's get the ball rolling on this and pressure on the GAA to make it happen. Start with social media discussions and then talk to people in your clubs.

The inter-county system is by it's nature not a competition of equals and even if the Dubs were expelled completely the counties you name would still win nothing and get regular hammerings in the championship.

Galway has both codes at top level, so the county is split in 2 already

Thats the stuff. Don't let Gilroys oul bluster cloud the issue.
A reverse Granny rule is needed for Dublin. Sure only for the exiled country lads they would have nothing according to Gilroy himself. Between the canals, where the real Dubs live, nothing going on.

You may stop all them Cavan lads putting in their time with Brigids, CS!

Here is a list of Dublin GAA clubs, can anyone help to put them in their geographic administrative areas. It would be interesting for the purpose of this exercise and discussion.

As an aside I don't see Park Rangers there, used to know the guy running it....in the Phoenix Park,he passed away many years ago....he was a great gael!

If we're talking about the removal of Dublin from inter-county competition to be replaced by these four new teams then surely we need to be looking at the creation of more new teams in order to even everything up?

Get every 'county' to be in or around the same population wise.

From what I remember, the fairly recent experiment with the Fingal hurling team was a failure. Why might it work better this time?

I totally agree with having things even.Perhaps its time for an in depth look at the current situation with teams of players representing their counties of birth,it could take something revolutionary like having teams representing areas of similar population competing against each other.
The situation at the moment is not working and its incumbent on the GAA to come up with a solution where we have meaningful competition amongst teams.....otherwise gaelic football and indeed the gaa might not have a great future.

Best I can do. Some might be wrong, off the top of my head stuff. Some clubs' grounds might be in one but most players come from another area etc.

Call it what you like, but no harm to let a bit of honesty emerge from the fog, i.e. the division of Dublin or otherwise will have no positive effect on the prospect of the vast majority of counties achieving provincial or national honours.

No need for the inverted commas when talking about County Dun Laoghaire- Rathdown, County Fingal and County South Dublin, these are actual counties, they were all established in 1994 when Co. Dublin was abolished as administrative division for local government.

I don't think any genuine true GAA people want to see Dublin split or have a Laois/Offaly v Dublin scenario.

County boundaries are too long around and too tribal to be messed with. We all see the issues that can occur when clubs amalgamate.

Nah, i think we we should just go with all the official local government areas in the Republic as it makes logical sense

It's not really though. It seems there's only outcry when Dublin hammer the likes of Meath. However, nobody batted an eyelid when Meath put 7 goals past Wicklow a few weeks before, or when Mayo beat Leitrim.
The county structure is unequal in its nature, as someone mentioned above. Galway's population advantage over Leitrim is proportionally greater than Dublin's over Galway.
It's definitely a problem if no one can compete with Dublin, but splitting Dublin would be only a small part of a true solution in this regard.
