Replying To SupermanSub:  "I agree that the squad is enough if they want to bring more leave some of the huge back room team at home. They know what they are getting into when they are called up."
Well its 40 max per team between players, coaches and all backroom team. Media isnt covered in that figure of 80.

What huge backroom and which of those are not necessary?

Replying To KillingFields:  "Nonsense but players in squads can get to see the games on tv. They are not required on match day. Journalists jobs rely on being at the game.
Im not stirring anything and have played multiple sports with multiple teams."
I was struggling to make underage Wexford panels some years when I was underage. If I wasn't on the panel, I didn't expect a free ride or anything to be handed to me just because I trained with the team.

Well obviously with the backroom team certain personnel are not necessary on the day like dieticians nutricians and physco s etc.

Good for you StoreysTash. At least you are talking from a point of experience and contribution. I am sure your manager if in this situation would want to do the best to reward you. I probably think if you were a manager you would do the same for your players. I know for me with 20 years and counting of coaching I would stand up for my team when I thought reward was reasonable and warranted. That is why I think the condemnation of John Kiely is over the top. It used be attacks on Brian Cody and y'ere present manager Davy Fitz. O yes don't forget all that vitriol on Derek McGrath. How does that look the way teams are playing today.
You have your opinion on this player issue and I respect you for that. I have mine and am okay to disagree.

I am OK to disagree with everybody on this board. None of us are right and all everybody is doing is offering opinions.
I don't really feel that strongly about many things GAA related, I'm fairly disillusioned with the game(s) in general but have hope that the split season might stop me from just quitting the games. I wasn't hurling this year but for Covid and living with my parents again.

Replying To ulsterrules:  "Maybe people should be asking why counties need so many players in the squad in the first place . Over 30 for a game that only starts 15. This squad nonsense has got out of hand in the last 20 years and they should be reduced. Both in football and hurling. Keilys comment in normal times are 100% right but we are not in normal times. They are lucky to be allowed to play. They should enjoy that fact, instead of giving medical advice to the nation.

We have not covered ourselves in glory with recent club championships across the country remember."
Very silly thing to say when it's clearly counties with big squads that are winning All Ireland's.

Just after a big final win, John backs his squad players unable to attend the game. He is 100% right. All panel members should be allowed to attend. It's ridiculous. Load of media there when half them aren't needed.

A huge stadium and neither team can bring more than the allocated numbers which means players training all year miss out. We had the same ridiculous situation in club games this year, lads missing out outside the match day 24.

Time for government to address this.

The government have far more important things to address this nonsense.
Where do you stop if you say let all players into the ground? How are half of the media not needed?
It isnt ridiculous at all.

Well said Yew tree. It's disgraceful the way panel members are being treated when they allow ex players into the matches on the pretence of being analysts and writing articles for newspapers. John Kiely is correct. I touched this on a different post. Allow panel members in and stop the rest. I know you need a commentator and Co commentator etc and analysts but those anaylists that are not needed on the day and those players who get big money to write newspaper columns should nt be allowed in to the detriment of the players. It's wrong. So my message for these boys who are getting in by default is Stay At Home and watch in on the telly and let the people that really matter in.

What analysts are not needed on the day?

I can see the point John Kiely is making, but it didn't come across well. A bigger question for me is: do counties really need panels of 36?? It sounds completely excessive to be - a huge additional expense, and ties up a number of players who are just being used to make up numbers. Realistically at least 6 of John's 10 who were "left at home" have absolutely no chance of getting any game time in the championship. In a normal season, those players would be much better off with their clubs.

How many would you drop from a squad?"
A huge stadium should easily cater for everybody wrong to blame Journalists though they add hugely to those Matches

We are all delighted to read next day about the matches is say Kiely diden't mean a dig at reporters but it came across somehow in the wrong context."
You have to limit numbers at some level so where is that level?
What would you see as minimum needed to allow a game take place and max that should be allowed into a game in these times?"]Q. You have to limit numbers at some level so where is that level?

Uh! Uh! Liam Cahill is in trouble now and throw in Ollie Canning and JJ Delaney. The full rigours of this forum needs to come down on top of them.

You can have 26 on match day in the ground. at what stage do you limit numbers into ground?

photographers: Who all need to be there they cant do their work from home?

Players not involved in a match day squad are not needed matchday in the stadium and as we are limiting travel they dont attend its very simple.

A lot of people have to go places to do their work and are not allowed due to limited travel. The game does not need photographers to go on.
