Replying To hashtag2017:  "Ah lord moc.dna he was never going to take SW off. If the stats men were doing their job they would have ticked at least 5 possessions lost by him. First minute pass to no one ball went over the end line. Few minutes later caught in possession as he soloed forward, next possession kicked to full forward line (where he should have been), Barrett in front possession lost, brutal pass to JD (stretchered off) and at the end a 40:60 pass to Heaney, game over. Throw into the mix that his man marker kicked a point and I think you will see that one of most experienced players had a bad day at the office."
Thank god he used his brain and not the turnover counters and left Shane on. He had a very poor start but got us back into the game with some great scores. On a day when nothing was happening or sticking in the inside line, we needed someone who could carry the ball and kick scores from further out. He certainly did that.
Apart from Paul Conroy, he's the only other player who kicked a few scores from distance.
His man marker was very quiet in the second half, which was a big help to us. He had enough on his plate following SW.
Lots of Galway players made a huge amount of mistakes on Sunday. Mayo players made plenty too. It was a very nervy game.
In terms of positive contributions made though, 3 great scores from play and a very good ball in which led to Heaney's goal chance, was as good as anyone.

So he has a scoring differential of +2 versus his marker and a possession differential of -5 (at least) and we are all gloating about his performance. How many passes did he actually complete, me thinks not a lot. Our backs make the same mistakes and all the armchair pundits want rid of them. Remember also he missed his frees, Dean Rock doesn't. Young Darcy didn't appear to do much wrong and he got the curly finger. If correct I think this was his second time substituted in the first half this year, not good for his confidence, also happened to Tom F against Dublin. As you have pointed out every player on the Galway team last weekend made a huge amount of mistakes, both Kelly brothers, Walsh, Conroy, GOD, Daly, McDaid, Silke and we certainly suffered not have a game in the 4 weeks. We have no reason to panic, we have buckets of talent. We just need a quality coach to bring us to the next level, we have the players.

@Galways fans...where was robert finnerty on sunday? Didnt feature at all.
I was very impressed with him in the league and assumed he would be starting at weekend, much less not seeing gametime at all. He must surely have been ****** off looking at someone like sice get in.

Ian Burke, quality player that he is has been off form since his allstar year now and rarely troubles the scoreboard.
Felt sorry for Paul Conroy and Shane Walsh who seem to be getting unfair stick in some quarters but those 2 were single handedly carrying the fight with inspirational points.

Going to be an awful frustrating winter for galway watching a poor Mayo team get to an all ireland final.
Surely they will be champing at the bit in 2021 and should be able to add Duggan, Cooke, Varley, Brannigan, A fit Comer, Tierney amongst others

Whats the story with Ian Burke? Although i think his form was overrated when he got his Allstar(Comer and Walsh were more deserving) He was a decent player. Last few times I have watched him I didn't think he was anywhere near good enough. Surely Galway have better forwards than him in his current form of the last two years

He made plenty of errors yes but Galway would not have been in that game in the last few minutes if he wasn't on the pitch. I can't think of another player in Ireland who could score the point he did soloing along the sideline vs. Keegan in all honesty, not in the way that he did it.

Of course he can improve and I hope he will have learned a lot from his own performance on Sunday because if he irons out his mistakes he could take over games on his own, no problem, he is that talented.

I heard Oisín McConville say he is a haircut away from being his favourite player haha

He made some mistakes but he kept at it when a lot of players would have let their confidence drain away and drift out of the game. He got back into the game and made a big contribution. Galway need more options than him though, he's carrying too much of the burden. Like Cillian but he can score from play, stay on his feet and has nicer hair.

Leitrim: 2 titles (1.65%), beaten finalists 9 times. Total Final appearances 11

Few stats are a bit mad when you see them actually written down e.g. both Ulster and Leinster have one County each who have never won the Provincial (and it's not even Kilkenny in Leinster!!!); Wicklow haven't even been in a final since the 19th Century; Kerry and Cork have won just over 90% of the Munster titles between then and have contested 69 of the 131 finals (and since 1922 their names have been on the trophy all but 2 years!). With the exception of Antrim (1951), each of the other 8 Counties in Ulster have won the title at least once in the last 23 years - in the same time period 6 Leinster, 4 Connacht and the 2 Munster Counties have won titles.

As the old saying goes, he "doesn't like it up him".

A nice player and shines in a dominant Corofin team, but I've seen him go missing more often than not in a maroon jersey.

I haven't seen anyone gloating about his performance. We have nothing to gloat about from Sunday. Pretty much everyone mentioned that he mixed the very bad with the very good on Sunday and a bit in between. Without him though, we wouldn't have been near Mayo at the end.
I was responding to your suggestion that they might have considered subbing him. Unless we had an early 20s Padraic Joyce or Michael Meehan waiting on the sideline to replace him, that would have been utterly stupid.
Agreed on D'Arcy. We were doing well around the middle when he was taken off and it was surprising. Steede didn't contribute much in the 50 mins he was on.

Grand bit of research but you have been fairly selective using 23 years as the cut off. If you used 26 years then you will see all 5 Connacht counties have been champions.
All them stats though do show the value of keeping the provinces, good share of silverware around the counties. Those who want them done away with for an open draw need to realise that it would mean limiting the chance of winning silverware in championship to a handful of teams across the country.

Leitrim: 2 titles (1.65%), beaten finalists 9 times. Total Final appearances 11

Average would be 24.2 (24) titles per County and 48 final appearances.

With the exception of Antrim (1951), each of the other 8 Counties in Ulster have won the title at least once in the last 23 years - in the same time period 6 Leinster, 4 Connacht and the 2 Munster Counties have won titles."
You forgot London and New York in Connacht."
Didn't forget - just left out as neither have been constants until mid-70s (London) and 1999 (NY) and bored and all as I was I wasn't going to be splitting Connacht down in to periods/eras of 5 teams, 6 teams and 7 teams.

We just need a quality coach to bring us to the next level, we have the players."

I presume you dont rate Joyce as coach..
Who would you get ?

Horans likely to be knocking around the Mayo setup for at least another 3 years ,
and will probably hand over the reigns to Rochford when he's had his 2nd cut at it..

Could be another decade lost for Galway especially if they go chopping and changing managers again..

Grand bit of research but you have been fairly selective using 23 years as the cut off. If you used 26 years then you will see all 5 Connacht counties have been champions.
All them stats though do show the value of keeping the provinces, good share of silverware around the counties. Those who want them done away with for an open draw need to realise that it would mean limiting the chance of winning silverware in championship to a handful of teams across the country."
Yeah fair enough - was only scanning through and noticed that ourselves apart every other County in Ulster had won one since 1997 and then had a quick look at each other Province from that date. Had set out to just see how the wins/finals compared per Province and was just picking up on a few bits as was collecting the data.

Well with all due respect Joyce has done nothing to warrant being called a coach, he is the manager. Donie Buckley springs to mind. Again the Corofin contingent, Morris/Comer or both.

You can be sure most top level managers have heavy input into the coaching.
I'm sure he will have a good idea which direction he needs to go moving the group forward.
