Huge congratulations to Graham Reilly on the unbelievable honour of been made Meath captain for 2017, great achievement personally and also for his family. Well done me auld mucker, lets hope you get the lift some silverware. Good to start with a win. A few now lads showed up well, kennelly fielded ball well and I thought Conor Downey looked very good. Ruairi O,Cualiieann and lenihan showed well and worked hard filling back when they came in aswell. Wicklow were shocking poor tho, I know they are a team wed expect to beat and I know it's O'Byrne Cup, but Christ they were bad. Some of the first half misses were unbelievable. Then the fact that they couldn't get a right footed forward to take a 13m free and needed a defender to come all the way up to take it said it all. Inside forward line was very static throughout with very little movement being offered to the ball carrier's coming in. We seemed to overcomplicate things a bit when we were recycling possession in the opposition half when we could have been a bit more direct but then again there was very little movement inside. O'Sullivan, Downey, Keoghan and Reilly were our best players while O'Brien and Menton were solid without being spectacular in the middle. It's difficult to measure yourself against an opposition who were very inferior though so nobody should be getting too excited. You couldn't fail that start, albeit Wicklow were shocking. . Some outstanding performances from Sullivan Reilly, keoghan, and Kennelly, however no one actually played bad, everyone did what was asked, ward looked good in ff , all forwards had scored by ht if memory serves me right which.I think is a first for Meath team in Lon while, also both midfielders and half backs all got on scoring sheet. Look you can only do you're part regardless of opposition and we did that professionally, there was no complacency at any time even when game was well and truly over everyone kept fighting, again a First in long time. Fitness levels were considerably improved so congrats to strength and conditioning people. Graham was Andy leader on the field and could be seen given direction regularly, Andy himself was vocal when needed and must have been happy with all round display, its first match in January and still work to be done however I feel we are ahead of the game compared to some of our rivals, although it was a tiring condition to play in errors didn't seem to be too prevalent, now ok there was a few that a better team would punish, but I am very happy with that start. Have to say what I like the most is that we were 1-12 to 0-3 points up at half time. But still pushed on and won the 2nd half comfortably enough as well. I know they are a poor opposition but lets not forget in 2015 champo we only beat them by 4. Not a tough test at all but good signs. Look everything comes with a health warning as Wicklow were as poor a side as I have seen. Taught Downey was excellent especially First half linking up well with Menton for the breaking ball, and never wasted anything, and never looked to pass back either. I was really impressed with kennelly looked real good in the air also winning a lot a kick outs and set up some good attacks also. Also I was delighted to Ruairi O Coileain come I know very little about him but he played well when came has pace to burn, Some real intelligent play from him with nice vision on cross field passing. Jack Hannigan kick outs where excellent looked really comfortable, but all to easy for me. As compared to the Wicklow keeper he poor and that's been nice. He Killed Wicklow with some shocking kick outs. Over all Meath look very organized smothered and snuffed out Wicklow attacks Meath defense where never threatened, COS, I was on my own at the game and I half thinking of legging at half time only wanted to see some subs so stayed to end. I heard a rumor that Andy Mc banned flashy boots and long hair. I did take a quick look and didn't see any yellow or orange boots on the Meath lads. It's not about losing your ability it's about thinking more of your appearance than your game, letting the ego get too big, I do recall a Mayo friend of mine texting me during the Dublin game last year amazed at the fact that a Meath player had "his hair in a bun" purely because he never associated Meath footballers with such personal styles.
