Leitrim Gaels sprung an upset in the second round of the Leitrim senior football championship yesterday evening by dealing defending champions Mohill defeat.
It finished 1-15 to 1-13 at the Leitrim Gaels Community Field, where the visitors had trailed by as many as 10 points before ace attacker Keith Beirne came off the bench and hit 1-8 to try and inspire a comeback which fell two points short in the end.
Early scores via Jones brothers Ryan and Connall, Donal Casey and skipper Aidan Flynn settled the home side in nicely and Garvan Jones would add a two-pointer to extend their lead.
After that, a Shaun Chandler fisted goal had the Gaels moving towards a surprise 1-10 to 0-5 half-time and they’d add the first two points of the restart through Ryan Jones and Liam Chandler.
Beirne landed two frees shortly after his introduction and would go on to score a penalty towards the end, but it wasn’t enough as the hosts held on for a famous win over the 10-time champions.
Meanwhile, last year’s runners-up Ballinamore Sean O’Heslins got their first win of this year’s campaign by edging out Glencar/Manorhamilton (0-18 to 0-17) and Aughawillan also recorded victory after defeating Mevlin Gaels on a 1-16 to 2-9 scoreline.
