'If I was Ger Brennan, I would have stood on the sideline'

Oisín McConville feels Ger Brennan should have flouted his ban by taking his place on the sideline for Dublin’s All-Ireland SFC Round 1 defeat to Louth last Sunday.

The Dublin manager is currently serving a 12-week suspension arising from an incident with Galway S&C coach Cian Breatnach McGinn over 10 weeks ago, but there is a feeling of injustice in the capital after Jim McGuinness avoided a similar ban following a flashpoint with Diarmuid O’Connor during Donegal’s win over Kerry last Saturday week.

Dublin skipped media duties after their first championship loss to the Wee County in 53 years at Croke Park, but McConville feels they didn’t go far enough.

"If I was Ger Brennan at the weekend, I would have arrived at Croke Park and stood at the sidelines, with the blessing of the County Board," the 2002 Armagh All-Ireland SFC winner told the GAA Social podcast.

"I would have went to the County Board during the week and said it was time to make a stand. Dublin made a stand after the game because they didn't talk to any press or any media duties.

"But I feel strongly enough that I think Ger Brennan should have went and put himself on the line."

He added: "They obviously feel strongly about it, but I feel it was the day to make a bigger stand than refusing media duties.

"I feel that strongly about it - that was the thing that was ringing in my head all week.

"Does not talking to the media hurt? You make a point but they are under no obligation to do media duties anyway."
