Castletown Liam Mellows are Wexford senior football champions for the third time in four years after recording a 0-14 to 1-7 win over Shelmaliers at Chadwicks Wexford Park this afternoon.
Jonathan Bealin was in fine shooting form for the defending champions who led by double scores going into injury-time prior to Graham Staples grabbing a consolation goal for Shelmaliers.
In a repeat of the Model County’s 2023 SFC decider, which Shelmaliers won by a point, Donnacha Holmes and Bealin registered the first two points of the game for Castletown ahead of Darragh Brooks doubling their advantage with a two-pointer from a free.
Simon Donohoe grabbed Shelmaliers’ first point in the 10th minute and they’d close the gap thanks to Conor Hearne backing up a point with a superb effort from outside the arc on 18 minutes.
Skipper Colin Kennedy nudged Castletown back in front and they’d move towards a 0-7 to 0-4 lead at half-time after scores from Bealin and Liam Coleman.
The holders raced out of the traps for the second-half as Conor Carty’s two-pointer and a single from Bealin stretched their advantage to six and, with their opponents only registering three more points in the regulation left, a late goal from Staples wouldn't be enough to deny Castletown a record-extending 14th SFC success.
