Tyrone are expected to be without Joel Kerr for Sunday’s All-Ireland MFC final against Kerry after his professional soccer contract with West Ham United commenced on July 1.

The talented teenager signed for the Hammers on a three-year deal from Glentoran in March, but his contract only took effect this week. The Rock clubman, who is hoping to follow in the footsteps of fellow Tyrone man and Liverpool star Conor Bradley, has been in fine scoring form in the Red Hands’ run to the Tom Markham Cup decider, bagging two goals against Roscommon in the All-Ireland semi-final and 1-2 against Cavan in the Ulster final.

When he signed for the Premier League club four months ago, Glentoran’s academy manager Michael Jackson said of Kerr: “I’m absolutely delighted for Joel and his family.  No-one deserves this opportunity more right now. He’s earned it through sheer determination, consistency and the standards he sets for himself and those around him.

“When he was part of our U16 NIFL squad last season, every single player looked up to him. He led by example through his passion and drive and he played a huge part in helping that group win the league title.

“It’s incredibly rewarding to see a player like Joel progress, not just because of his ability, but because of the character and leadership he’s shown throughout his journey with us.”
