Jim McGuinness saluted Michael Murphy after he played a key role in Donegal’s comeback against Galway.

The 2012 All-Ireland SFC winning captain came off the bench at half-time in Ballyshannon to equal Neil McGee’s record of 194 appearances. Donegal trailed by six points after 43 minutes and were also a man down after Stephen McMenamin was issued with a second yellow card, but fought back to earn a 1-17 to 0-20 draw courtesy of Peadar Mogan’s late two-pointer.

“Amazing,” McGuiness said of Murphy.

“He’s still going as strong as he is and making as much of an impact as ever, nearly two decades after he started. Brilliant performance today, and we see him as a very important player for us moving forward.

“I think he showed that today, and I don’t think minutes will be restricted for him moving forward either, I think he’s well set.”

The Donegal manager added: There were a lot of mistakes and handling errors, but, taking a step back, we’re very happy we managed to eke out a draw.

“We were down to 14 men twice, for 40 minutes in total, and to find a way from six points down in a very physical game, it was brilliant to find a way to get a point on the board.”
