Westmeath edged Meath by 0-25 to 1-19 in Mullingar this afternoon to claim their first Allianz Hurling League Division 2 victory of the season.

Kevin O’Brien’s side struck points through marksman Killian Doyle, Eoin Keyes and David Williams late in the first-half to take in a 0-15 to 0-10 lead at the break.

The hosts added to their advantage with unanswered scores from Jack Gillen, Keyes and Josh Coll after the change of ends, but Meath would be right back in it after backing up a Mikey Cole point with a penalty which was converted by Gavin King in the 44th minute.

Three more points without reply via Doyle (free), Keyes and Eamonn Cunneen saw the Lake men back up by seven and three more Doyle frees down the home stretch would help them to close it out and inflict their neighbours with a first defeat in the league campaign.

The result sees Westmeath unbeaten two games in after having drawn with Kerry in Tralee last weekend, with a trip to sixth-placed London next on the schedule for them on Sunday week.
