While acknowledging their never-say-die attitude, Peter Queally felt Kilkenny were fortunate to edge out his Waterford side in Division 1A of the Allianz Hurling League courtesy of a controversial late free from Cian Kenny.

The Deise boss argued that it was a 'soft free' after the Cats left Nowlan Park with a 1-21 to 1-20 victory.

“Anyone who was over there (on that side of the pitch) thought it was a soft enough free. Especially when the game’s in the melting pot and everything’s on the line, you kind of think that you’d have to really earn a free to get it," Quelly told reporters.

“If it’s a free, it’s a free. But by all accounts, it was a soft enough free for us to end up losing the game," he added before quipping: “Typical Kilkenny – you never have them beaten until you’re on the bus going home.”

Queally's opposite number Derek Lyng was delighted with the outcome.

“At the end, it looked like the momentum had gone with Waterford and I think the way we finished the game was really pleasing," he enthused.

“We made lots of mistakes, particularly in the second half. But we’re really happy with how we responded and kept going."
