Brian Hanley is set to be named as the new Roscommon senior hurling manager.

The Athenry man, who won eight Galway SHC and three All-Ireland club SHC medals in a glittering playing career, managed Westmeath's senior and U21 teams from 2011 to '14 before guiding his native Galway to two All-Ireland MHC titles. More recently, he managed the Galway U20s.

Hanley will replace Kevin Sammon, who stepped down as Roscommon manager two months ago. His backroom team will include Kieran Callan, Keith Daniels, Damian Lohan and Kieran Farrell, with Mike Frawley acting as S&C coach.

“Roscommon GAA is delighted to announce the appointment of Brian Hanley as the new manager of the Roscommon Senior Hurling team, subject to ratification at the next meeting of the Roscommon GAA County Board," a statement read.

"The term of appointment is three years, with the option of a further two years following a review.

"Brian, a native of Athenry, enjoyed an outstanding playing career. With his club, he won eight senior county titles and three All-Ireland club medals, scoring four points in the 2000 All-Ireland Final. He also secured county titles at every underage grade and represented Galway at both minor and U21 level.

"As a manager, Brian led the Westmeath senior and U21 teams from 2011 to 2014, achieving many notable results. Among these was a narrow, one-point defeat to Dublin in the U21 Championship. He left Westmeath hurling in a very strong position. Brian also managed a Galway U21 team that reached an All-Ireland Final, as well as two Galway minor teams that went on to win All-Ireland titles.

"Brian brings with him a wealth of experience. His backroom team will include Kieran Callan (Ardrahan), Keith Daniels (Loughrea), Damian Lohan (Four Roads), and Kieran Farrell (Oran). The strength and conditioning coach will be Mike Frawley. Other roles will remain unchanged or will be confirmed by Brian at a later date."
