St Faithleach’s sprung an early upset in the 2025 Roscommon senior football championship yesterday evening after defeating holders Padraig Pearses by 1-14 to 0-12 in Ballyleague.
An airtight first-half saw the teams’ level on 0-5 apiece, with David Rooney and county man Ciarain Murtagh hitting the last two scores of the opening period.
Jack Nevin shot Pearses in front early in the second-half, but the first two pointer of the game by Rossies star Diarmuid Murtagh surged St Faithleach’s ahead and Ciarain Murtagh would add another two-pointer ahead of Rooney rifling in the game’s only goal.
It left the defending champions chasing the game in the closing stages and, while they kept in touch through Paul Carey’s scores, they’d finish short on opening weekend.
Elsewhere on Friday evening, 21-time champions Clann na Gael were 2-12 to 1-8 winners over St Dominic’s while St Brigid’s inflicted an empathic 2-21 to 1-15 defeat on Elphin, Michael Glaveys recorded a 1-20 to 2-15 win against Western Gaels and Boyle made their goals count in a 2-13 to 0-15 victory over last year’s beaten finalists Roscommon Gaels.
