Tipperary U20 boss Brendan Cummins hailed his side’s “battling qualities” after they edged out Cork last night to record an opening round win in their Munster championship title defence.

Jamie Ormonde’s goal was key as the All-Ireland champions scored a 1-21 to 0-22 win over the Rebels in Thurles as they now get set to travel to Waterford next Wednesday (7pm) looking to make it two wins from two.

Speaking to TippFM Sport afterward his side’s two-point win at Semple Stadium, Cummins credited his players for never panicking when the pressure was on.

“We’re happy with the battling qualities the lads showed. We knew Cork coming up tonight were going to be really, really good and it’s exactly what we expected,” said the five-time All Star.

“I think when we went a man up just before half-time it probably helped Cork to get set up properly for the second-half which they did and no more than us in the first half they got the jump on us and did really, really well.

“Then Jamie came out around the half forward line and started getting on a few breaks and got us a bit more momentum. And of course the goal was the key because at that stage we were on the ropes. But the lads to be fair to them kept plugging away, didn’t mind the scoreboard, never panicked and thankfully in the finish we fell across the line.”
