Courtwood produced a major upset against Portlaoise yesterday evening to advance to the semi-finals of the Laois senior football championship.

It finished 4-11 to 0-14 at Laois Hire O’Moore Park, where the 5/1 outsiders made their goals count against last year’s beaten finalists.

With the scoreboard reading 0-4 apiece, Mark Bates’ side stormed in front in the 22nd minute thanks to Ryan Little’s goal and the next attack would see Cian Doyle with the ball in The Town’s net.

From there, Courtwood would go on to hold a 2-5 to 0-7 lead at the half and more goals from Alan Kinsella and Doyle ensured that Portlaoise were sent packing and the ‘Wood moved into the last four.

The day’s other quarter-final clash in the O’Moore County saw defending champions Portarlington completely dominant in a 20-point victory over Arles-Killeen in Portlaoise.

The returning Jake Foster and Ronan Coffey bagged the goals for the holders in a 2-24 to 1-7 win which sees them through to another county SFC semi-final.
