Former Tyrone footballer Conor Meyler has revealed his surprise at the appointment of former GAA president John Horan as chair of the Steering Group on Integration.
Horan has been tasked with overseeing the integration process involving the GAA, LGFA and Camogie Association, following Mary McAleese’s departure from the position.
Meyler, who holds a PhD in sport leadership and gender, had previously expressed a preference for an independent chair with expertise in sports governance and gender reform.
Speaking on RTÉ’s Inside Sport, the 2021 All-Ireland winner explained why Horan’s appointment was unexpected, while stressing that he believed the former GAA president could do a good job.
“I was surprised, to be honest," Meyler said on the programme.
"I'm probably surprised that they went with someone who has a background in the GAA. I know I've been quite vocal before about my own personal opinion and what research steered me, and my supervisory team, towards within the PhD.
"That was having an independent chair was the best move, going with something more competency-based, somebody who's come through a process that's been similar in terms of sporting governance, gender reform and merger process.
"So I was surprised, (but) I don't know John personally and I have no doubt that he will do a great job. He has obviously come in as well.
"This isn't just a GAA decision. The LGFA and Camogie (Association) are obviously all agreed on the decision, which is interesting as well.
"But surprised was my initial reaction and I know he sort of noted his own surprise in his interview."
Meyler also highlighted the challenges facing the integration process, particularly at county level, where access to pitches and facilities can vary considerably.
He believes a phased approach, backed by a clear five-year plan tailored to individual counties, will be important as the three associations work towards a more integrated future.
