Strokestown (Roscommon) are Connacht club intermediate football champions after recording a 4-11 to 0-14 win against Kilmeena (Mayo) at Hastings Insurance MacHale Park this afternoon.

Pierce McGinley’s men made their goals count in this provincial decider in Castlebar, with Colin Compton and Shane McGinley bagging two of them inside the opening 20 minutes.

McGinley’s strike put the visitors into a 2-5 to 0-4 lead in the 17th minute and, after points from Kevin Finn (free) and Stephen Tighe, McGinley sent over a two-pointer that had his side up by seven come the interval.

Kilmeena would have the wind advantage for the second-half, landing a Stephen Staunton two-pointer early in the restart and backing it up with a Colin Hastings point, but they’d concede another goal via Tighe to fall nine behind (3-11 to 0-11) in the 48th minute.

Strokestown put the result beyond any doubt eight minutes later when Evan Moran got in for their fourth goal, sealing a historic day for the Roscommon club as they captured their first adult provincial title in some style.
