St Brigid’s were in impressive form yesterday evening as they saw off Michael Glaveys by 1-24 to 0-12 at Kiltoom in the opening round of their Roscommon senior football championship title defence.

Robbie Dolan’s point had pushed the holders into a 0-8 to 0-4 lead midway through the first-half and they’d find the net through Ben O’Carroll 10 minutes later to move towards a commanding 1-16 to 0-8 advantage at the break.

The Connacht champions would keep their opponents to just 0-4 after the change of ends, while scores from O’Carroll, Charlie O’Carroll and Ciaran Sugrue at the other end saw St Brigid’s comfortably over the line to an opening win.

Padraig Pearses ensured a strong start to their championship campaign by defeating Roscommon Gaels.

It finished 2-17 to 0-12 in Woodmount, where the would-be winners trailed by two at half-time before goals from Jack Nevin and Kealan Kelly in the opening 10 minutes of the restart helped propel Pearses to victory.

Meanwhile, Oran scored an emphatic 4-16 to 1-4 win against Elphin in their opener in Rockfield, where skipper Colin Walsh (2), James Fitzpatrick and Eoghan Murray netted the goals for the victors.
