Pat Spillane believes the involvement of star-studded divisional teams is doing the Kerry SFC no favours.
While Dr Crokes are the reigning champions, the Bishop Moynihan Cup has been dominated by district teams in recent years, most notably David Clifford’s East Kerry who were victorious in 2019, 2020, 2022 and 2023.
In his Sunday World column, Spillane claims the Kerry SFC has become ‘outdated’ due to the unfair advantage enjoyed by the divisional sides.
“In theory, the Kerry senior county championship is a good idea. It allows players from the small clubs, junior and novice, to come together to play senior county championship football. However, in my opinion, it’s now a competition that is outdated and no longer required,” he wrote.
“The East Kerry teams could probably pick a team where every one of the 1 to 15 would have played Kerry senior football at one time. North Kerry are an amalgamation of two previous North Kerry districts, Feale Rangers and Shannon Rangers. Now, this new North Kerry amalgamation has 13 clubs.
“A level playing field against the likes of East Kerry and North Kerry? You must be joking.”
