Na Fianna got off the mark in the Dublin senior 1 football championship after defeating Raheny by 0-16 to 0-11 at St Margaret's yesterday evening.
Having lost out to Thomas Davis in Round 1, last year’s runners up were able to bounce back in this one after shaking off a slow start to hit the front by the 21st minute thanks to back-to-back points from Conor McHugh.
From there, the Mobhi Road side would push on towards a 0-10 to 0-5 half-time lead and the same margin would stand between the sides come the final whistle.
Seamus Smith’s two-pointer put seven between the sides early in the restart and, while Brian Fenton would pull back a score for Raheny, Brian O'Leary and David Quinn helped maintain a comfortable lead for Na Fianna.
Goalkeeper Rob Hennelly sailed over a couple of placed balls to bring Raheny back within five, but they wouldn’t be able to close the gap as Na Fianna secured both points.
In Parnell Park, Kilmacud Crokes were comfortable in a 3-13 to 0-6 win over Whitehall Colmcille yesterday evening as they got up and running for the senior championship campaign.
Crokes, who lost out to Clontarf on opening weekend, had Paul Mannion back in their starting lineup for this one and dominated the first-half to take in a 1-9 to 0-2 lead, with Cian O’Connor netting their goal.
The 11-time champions added more majors after the change of ends via Shane Horan and substitute Padraig Purcell to see out the win which now sees them off the mark.
Meanwhile, Ballinteer St John’s defeated Clontarf by 1-12 to 0-11 in the later game at Parnell Park where Jack Lundy’s 27th minute goal proved key.
