Kilmainhamwood 2-17 Moynalty 0-10
Kilmainhamwood qualified for the semi finals of the Junior B championship after an impressive win over Moynalty in Drumconrath.
Moynalty started the brighter as Paddy Byrne kicked two early two pointers from frees along with one from play to give them an early 3 point lead as Stafford and Conlan had two early points for the Wood.
Matthew Vaughen then began to make his influence felt on the game. He kicked a good score from play before being a focal point in the Woods attack. Stafford kicked a good score from play after some patient build up from the Wood. The Wood began to take over with Kian Gillespie and Cillian Burns asserting their dominance around the middle. A Stafford free levelled things before a wonderful goal by the Wood where Noah Madden side stepped the keeper before handpassing to Vaughen to palm the ball into and empty net. The Wood continued to attack and Cillian Burns kicked a good point from play before Shane Townley kicked a free. Moynalty dominated the end of the half and scored two points to make the Scoreline 1-8 to 7 points at the break in favour of the Wood.
Moynalty started the second half brightly and scored two fisted points to reduce the deficit to 2 points. But this was the closest they would get. Rian Stafford kicked two outstanding two point frees to put 6 between the teams. Moynalty pegged one back before Stafford slotted a 45.
The Wood were reduced to 14 after Cillian Burns recieved a black card, but they remained dominant. Shane Burns had back to back diving blocks and which was indicative of the passion and hunger the Wood were showing for the ball. The game was put to rest after Aaron O Donnell won a long ball into the forward line, before passing to Ciaran Doyle who then put the ball across to Matthew Vaughen who palmed home his second goal of the night in what was a very impressive championship debut.
Stafford kicked another 2 pointer in the dying minutes and the Wood ran out 13 point winners.
This felt like a big win for the Wood as it has been years or perhaps even decades since they won a championship game where they were underdogs.
