Pierce Deane’s late free saw Breaffy and Castlebar Mitchels finish all square in the second round of the Mayo senior football championship yesterday evening.
The final scoreline read 0-12 to 0-12 in the Breaffy, where the visitors held the upper hand at the halfway stage with the help of unanswered points from James Durcan, Bob Tuohy and Cian Walsh during the second quarter.
Deane (free) and Aidan O’Shea sent over points before the break to trim down the Breaffy deficit (0-7 to 0-5) by half-time, and Deane and Joe Forry would trade points after the change of ends ahead of a Conor O’Shea two-pointer squaring things up.
The sides would be level four more times until the final whistle, with Castlebar looking to hold on to their 0-12 to 0-11 in the closing stages before the hosts won a free in front of the posts for Deane to convert and ensure the points were shared.
