Kilmallock edged out defending champions Na Piarsaigh by 1-22 to 0-24 in yesterday evening’s first round clash in the Limerick senior hurling championship at the TUS Gaelic Grounds.

Two frees from Micheál Houlihan in injury-time got Kilmallock over the line after they had trailed by 0-15 to 1-10 at half-time.

Na Piarsaigh, who saw Keith Dempsey register 0-10 for them, had led by six before a brilliant Sean O’Brien goal helped to trim his side’s deficit down to two by the break, and they’d eventually get it level by the 61st minute prior to Houlihan sending over the winner two minutes later.

Meanwhile, a 49th minute goal from Jason Gillane steered Patrickswell to a 1-21 to 0-20 victory over Newcastle West in Kilmallock.

Limerick stars Cian Lynch and Diarmaid Byrnes were in fine form for the winners who held a 0-15 to 0-7 advantage at half-time.

The second-half would see Newcastle West to within a point of their opponents by the 45th minute, but the 2019 champions steadied the ship and got the all-important goal from Gillane to help put a seal on the opening win.
