Leitrim moved into the semi-finals of the Connacht senior football championship by recording a first win over Sligo in a decade-and-a-half (3-15 to 1-20) at Markievicz Park this afternoon.

Barry McNulty (1-6), Keith Keegan and Ryan O’Rourke supplied the goals for Steven Poacher’s men as they set-up a last four date with holders Galway on April 25th.

It was the hosts that got out to an early 0-6 to 0-2 lead with the help of points from Niall Murphy, Lee Deignan and Luke Towey, but McNulty’s goal in the 16th minute lifted Leitrim and they’d move in front through a McNulty two-pointer 10 minutes later.

Keegan’s goal two minutes afterwards had the scoreboard reading 2-6 to 0-7, with a point from Ballinamore’s Tom Prior ensuring that half a dozen separated the sides come the break.

Prior pushed the visitors seven ahead early in the second-half, with two Deignan points and an Alan McLoughlin free the Yeats men’s response.

Fergal McLoughlin and Oisin McLoughlin raised white flags to restore the six-point advantage for Poacher’s side, and they’d hit the jackpot again when O’Rourke got in for their third goal in the 46th minute.

A Pat Spillane goal ignited Sligo’s fightback, with Towey and Deignan adding two-pointers afterwards, but McNulty (2) and Paul Honeyman got crucial scores for Leitrim down the home stretch and, in the end, an Alan McLoughlin two-pointer at the death would leave the home side one short.
