Brian Hayes struck two goals in the closing 10 minutes of normal time for Cork to edge a 2-20 to 1-21 victory over Galway at Pearse Stadium this evening.
Hayes’s goals came in the 61st and 65th minutes as Ben O’Connor’s men recorded their second win in as many games in Division 1A of the Allianz Hurling League while condemning the Tribesmen to their second loss in the process.
Tom Monaghan’s well-taken goal had helped the home side to edge a 1-9 to 0-11 lead at half-time, with O’Connor introducing Hayes and Tim O’Mahony off the bench at the start of the second-half.
Back-to-back points from Shane Barrett moved the Munster champions in front by the 39th minute and they’d edge things up Gavin Lee’s point was backed up by a brace of Cathal Mannion frees that ushered Galway back into the lead by the 58th minute.
Then came Hayes's first goal (watch it below) and the substitute would back it up with another some four minutes which suddenly had the scoreboard reading 2-20 to 1-16 in Salthill, leaving five late points from Aaron Niland (3 frees) as only consolation for Micheál Donoghue’s men when the final whistle sounded.
