A Westmeath school has been gripped by hurling and football fever as it closes in on a rare Leinster double.

Coláiste Mhuire, Mullingar has reached Leinster Post Primary Schools Senior ‘A’ Championship semi-finals in both codes and is striving to emulate Good Counsel, New Ross who won a Br Bosco Cup and Corn Uí Dhuill double 31 years ago.

Coláiste Mhuire are the reigning Br Bosco Cup holders, having ended a 42-year wait with victory over Ardscoil na Tríonóide, Athy in last year’s final, and they continue their title defence against another Kildare school in Naas CBS at Gracefield this Friday, January 16 at 11.30am.

Nine of the same players will also be involved when the Mullingar school's hurlers take on Kilkenny CBS for a place in the Corn Uí Dhuill decider next Wednesday, January 21 at a venue to be confirmed. Competing in the ‘A’ grade for the very first time, they had four points to spare over the combined Offaly Schools in last week’s quarter-final and are managed by Kilkenny man Micheál Lawlor, who is ably assisted by fellow teachers Ciaran O’Connor from Roscommon and Evan Tully from Longford along with former Westmeath U21 and Longford senior manager Adrian Moran, who is the team coach.
