The Mayo senior football championship commenced yesterday (Friday) evening with Belmullet and Castlebar Mitchels recording opening wins in the competition.

Belmullet were 2-9 to 1-9 winners over Knockmore in Knockmore, where Fionn O'Donoghue’s injury-time penalty proved the difference for the visitors.

Knockmore had held a 0-5 to 0-1 lead at the end of the first-half before Ryan O’Donoghue, back from championship duty with Mayo as they scored a first Sam Maguire Cup triumph in 75 long years, swung over a superb two-pointer that got Belmullet motoring.

The hosts responded with a goal but Kieran Lavelle’s men were able to cancel it out with one of their own before O'Donoghue’s late strike got them over the line.

In Balla, Castlebar Mitchels were in fine form in Round 1 as they dished out a 2-16 to 0-10 defeat to the home side.

Having built up a 0-12 to 0-2 lead by half-time, Mitchels added a through Cian Walsh early in the restart and would bag another on the way to claiming both points.
